The ornamental peach is a variety of the peach plant, belonging to the semi-double and double-flowered cultivars of the ornamental peach blossom category, with high ornamental value, and is a beautiful plant seen everywhere in residential communities, parks and streets. So, is the ornamental peach evergreen or deciduous?

1. Is the ornamental peach evergreen or deciduous?

The ornamental peach is a deciduous tree; its flowers are plump and vivid in color, with many flower forms. Common cultivars include the red-flowered green-leaved ornamental peach, the red-flowered purple-leaved ornamental peach, and the white-and-red bicolor sprinkling-gold ornamental peach, among others.

2. What is the propagation method for the ornamental peach?

To maintain good quality, grafting must be used for propagation, with wild peach (Prunus davidiana) as the rootstock. Using spring bud grafting or branch grafting, the grafting survival rate can reach more than 90%. The specific operation is as follows:

1. Grafting

The mother tree of the ornamental peach should be a robust plant free of pests and diseases, with excellent flowers and fruit. Select stout new shoots of the current year with plump buds as the scion. For summer bud grafting, a bud slice or a bud slice with a little wood can be cut, and the bark is peeled at the stem of the rootstock. When cutting the scion from the mother tree, remove the leaves but keep the petioles. At 1 cm below the scion bud, use the tip of a knife to cut upward, 1.5-2 cm long; the inner side of the bud should carry a little wood, with the bud located in the middle. For the rootstock, choose a seedling as thick as a pencil, with the stem 3-5 cm from the ground; select the vertical part on the north side of the trunk, make the first cut vertically 2 cm with a little wood, cut off 1/2-2/3 of the peeled bark, insert the grafting bud into the rootstock so that the cambium layers fit closely together, and pay special attention to leaving no gap at the lower part of the cut on the rootstock, binding tightly. Below the grafting bud, wrap plastic tape 2 turns to the left, then 2 turns to the right, binding evenly upward so as to prevent the bud from drying out and ensure firm union, leaving the grafting bud exposed. Note the timing of bud grafting: in southern China, mid-June to mid-July is best, while in northern China, mid-July to mid-August is suitable.

2. Management

10-15 days after bud grafting, the petiole turns yellow and falls off, which is a sign of survival; if the petiole turns black, it means it has not survived. After the surviving seedling grows new shoots and heals completely, remove the plastic tape, and cut the rootstock 1 cm above the graft union. After sprouting, remove the rootstock sprouts, and combine this with fertilization, generally applying compound fertilizer 1-2 times, to promote the lignification of the new scion shoots and give them cold resistance. To control aphids, spray a 2000-fold dimethoate solution; when leaf curl disease occurs on the leaves, lime sulfur mixture can be used.

When the ornamental peach blooms, it is very beautiful, and it is also a good container plant for the home; friends who are interested can try planting it.
