Umbrella plant, also known as umbrella sedge or windmill grass, gets its name because the shape of its leaves resembles the ribs of an open umbrella. It is cultivated in all provinces north and south across our country as an ornamental plant; it is native to Africa and widely distributed in the marshes at the edges of large lakes and rivers in forest and grassland regions. So how do you propagate umbrella plant from leaves?

How do you propagate umbrella plant from leaves?

Umbrella plant cannot be propagated from leaves. Umbrella plant can be propagated by cuttings, division, or seed sowing.

1. Division propagation, which is both fast and produces sturdy plants. The method is: in April or May each spring, first split off a small clump from the clustered umbrella plant (about 4 to 6 plants), and plant it in a flower pot of about 20 cm using pre-prepared garden soil mixed with organic fertilizer. Then dig a trench in an open area, deep enough to bury the flower pot. Bury the entire pot in the soil, water it once a day, and after 30 to 60 days new shoots like bamboo shoots will sprout.

2. Cutting propagation: umbrella plant cuttings can be taken in all four seasons. Cut a healthy terminal shoot segment 3-5 cm long, trim the umbrella-shaped leaves (bracts) slightly, insert it into sand so that the umbrella-shaped leaves lie flat and press closely against the sandy soil, keep the cutting bed moist and the air humid, with a room temperature of 20-25°C being suitable. After about 20 days, many small umbrella-shaped bract clusters and adventitious roots will emerge between the involucral bracts.

How do you care for umbrella plant?

For umbrella plant, use a well-drained, breathable, humus-containing neutral loam or peat soil, and disinfect and sterilize it first. Umbrella plant likes moisture; water it regularly to keep it moist, and also spray water to maintain humidity. Apply base fertilizer when repotting, and apply fertilizer 1-2 times in spring and autumn; a compound fertilizer can be used. The suitable growing temperature is about 15-25°C, and in winter move it indoors to keep it warm. It tolerates shade, but needs to be provided with plenty of sunlight.
