Yew is the general term for plants of the genus Taxus. The genus has about 11 species, and China has 4 species and 1 variety, mainly distributed across various regions of the Northern Hemisphere. What we generally call yew refers to China's yew tree species, which are distributed in both the north and south of our country, so how does yew generally overwinter?

1. How yew overwinters

Yew is suitable for planting throughout both the north and south of China. It is shade-loving, drought-tolerant and cold-resistant, and requires soil with a pH of 5.5-7.0. It is a shade-tolerant species by habitat and can grow even under dense forest, and though it is long-lived it does not form forests. It is mostly found in mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forests dominated by Korean pine. It grows on rocky or barren soil on mountain tops, mostly in shrub form.

Southern yew can endure low temperatures of -11°C and can overwinter outdoors in the south. Media yew can endure low temperatures of -25°C and can overwinter in the open ground in North China. Japanese yew can endure low temperatures of -42°C and can overwinter outdoors anywhere in the country. Yunnan yew can also overwinter in the open ground in the south. When caring for it indoors, there is not much difference from ordinary care; just pay attention to increasing air humidity, avoid letting the soil dry out, and do not place it directly in front of hot air from an air conditioner.

2. Yew varieties in China

China's yews mainly consist of five varieties plus some other hybrid varieties. The main five varieties are Yunnan yew, Tibetan yew, Japanese yew, Chinese yew and southern yew, among which southern yew is a variety; the Media yew mentioned above is a hybrid of Japanese yew and European yew.

Yew is a first-class protected tree species in our country and is a relatively precious medicinal material. This plant is of great benefit to the body and even has a certain therapeutic effect on some cancers. It also has a certain effect in strengthening the body's resistance and immunity. Yew has a history of 2.5 million years on Earth, but because under natural conditions yew grows slowly and has poor regenerative capacity, for a long time no large-scale yew raw material forest base has formed worldwide. This plant is very much worth protecting.

The above is some relevant knowledge about yew. Yew has very strong cold tolerance and needs little extra care, so it can be said to be a very easy tree species to grow.
