Elodea refers to fine-leaved Elodea, a plant in the family Hydrocharitaceae, genus Elodea, a perennial wetland whole-plant submerged herbaceous plant. So, how does Elodea propagate?

1. How does Elodea propagate?

Elodea propagates by rooting, and its survival ability is relatively strong. If you want to plant Elodea in your own fish tank, you can get cut Elodea from a friend's home and then let it root.

2. Cultivation techniques for Elodea

1. Tank cultivation

When decorating an aquarium indoors, it is advisable to use gravel with a diameter of 3-5 mm as the cultivation substrate. If conditions do not allow, washed coarse sand can also be used as the cultivation substrate. The operation can be carried out when the seedlings have grown more new roots. If planted separately, the container used is usually a medium-sized aquarium; note that the placement location should ensure the plant can receive the light it needs. First spread the cultivation substrate on the bottom of the aquarium to a thickness of 5-7 cm. To make the operation easier, you can first pour an appropriate amount of water into the tank and then proceed with planting. After the operation is finished, continue pouring water into the cultivation container to the required height.

2. Management

Fine-leaved Elodea is not strict about water quality and can be cultivated in freshwater with lower hardness; note that salinity should not be too high. The pH of the water body is best controlled between 6.5-7.5, that is, slightly acidic to slightly alkaline. It has a relatively high demand for fertilizer, and during the vigorous growth stage, fertilizer should be applied every 2-3 weeks. If conditions permit, carbon dioxide can be applied to the plants. It can also grow well under light shade; using special fluorescent lamps and giving the plant 6-8 hours of artificial light every day also allows it to grow normally. When the plant is about 10 cm tall, it should be pinched back once to promote branching. Under good management conditions, fine-leaved Elodea is not prone to disease and is also less subject to attack by harmful animals. This plant is perennial, takes shape relatively quickly, and tends to age easily. When the plant is too tall, its ornamental effect will be affected, so its ornamental period after each planting is only 3-5 months. Without renewing the plant, continuous cultivation should not exceed 6 months.
