We all know that lychee is a fruit of the subtropical climate, and it mainly grows in the south of our country, such as Guangxi, Hainan and other regions, which is why there is the historical anecdote that an ancient emperor of our country wore out several horses just to win a smile from his consort, so that Yang Guifei could eat fresh lychees.

Can lychee be grown in the north

No. Lychee and longan need to grow in places that are relatively hot and rainy, and the climate and rainfall of the north do not meet these requirements.

Construction of a lychee plantation

1. Choose a good site. For high-yield lychee cultivation, it is ideal to choose hilly land or sloping land with an open terrain, a slope of less than 30 degrees, loose and fertile soil, and a water source, as the site for developing a plantation.

2. Do a good job of planning. For the selected site, carefully carry out the planning of variety selection, divisions, roads, drainage and irrigation systems, fertilizer bases, shelterbelts and auxiliary buildings, so as to facilitate standardized management of the orchard.

3. Reasonably determine planting density. Generally, for mountain land, a row spacing and plant spacing of 3.5×3.5 m or 3.5×4 m, with 50-60 plants per mu, is a relatively reasonable density.

4. Dig large holes and apply sufficient base fertilizer. For reclaiming hilly land to build an orchard, open contour terrace belts or contour trenches according to the row spacing specifications. Then, according to the selected plant spacing, dig planting holes at fixed points; the hole specifications are 1 m in length, width and depth, and each hole should be given 40 kg of decomposed organic fertilizer such as garbage compost, green manure, barnyard manure, and pig and cattle dung as base fertilizer.

5. Plant carefully. When planting, hold the seedling with one hand and gently backfill fine soil with the other, backfilling until the soil covers about 2 cm above the roots, water thoroughly to settle the roots, then continue backfilling, and when the backfilled soil is about 10 cm above the ground, form a tree basin, then cover with thatch or stem and haulm grass to retain moisture, and set up a support beside the seedling to prevent the wind from blowing and shaking the seedling loose and causing death. After planting, water once every 3 days on sunny days, pay attention to drainage to prevent waterlogging on rainy days, and check the survival situation after 30 days and replant in time.

Growth habits of lychee

Lychee likes high temperature and high humidity, and likes light and sun. Its heredity also requires relatively low temperatures during the flower bud differentiation stage, but a minimum temperature of -2 to -4°C will cause freezing damage. During the flowering stage, clear, warm weather that is not dry and hot is most favorable. Too low humidity, continuous cloudy and rainy weather, dry and hot weather, or strong north winds are all unfavorable for flowering and pollination. If the flowering and fruiting stages encounter unfavorable disastrous weather, it will cause flower and fruit drop, or even total crop failure.

Efficacy and effects of lychee

1. Replenish energy and benefit the brain. Lychee flesh contains abundant glucose and sucrose, with a total sugar content above 70%, ranking first among many fruits, and it has the effect of replenishing energy and increasing nutrition. Research has proven that lychee has a nourishing effect on brain tissue and can significantly improve symptoms such as insomnia, forgetfulness and mental fatigue.

2. Enhance immune function. Lychee flesh is rich in vitamin C and protein, which helps enhance the body's immune function and improve disease resistance. Since ancient times, it has always been regarded as a precious tonic.

3. Lower blood sugar. Lychee contains an amino acid that has a blood sugar-lowering effect and is very suitable for diabetic patients.

4. Reduce swelling and detoxify, stop bleeding and relieve pain. In addition to its widely known nourishing effect, lychee can also be used for surgical diseases, such as tumors, scrofula, severe boils and swellings, and traumatic bleeding.

5. Stop hiccups and stop diarrhea. Lychee is sweet and warm and strengthens the spleen, and can also lower adverse rising qi, making it a good dietary therapy product for people with intractable hiccups and diarrhea before dawn.

It can thus be seen that lychee is a plant that likes high temperature, high humidity and sunlight, so it is not suitable for growing in the cold north. Therefore, for friends who grow lychee, it is very necessary to understand the growth habits of lychee, otherwise great effort will be spent but good lychees will not be grown.
