In order to prevent herbicide damage, application techniques must be strictly followed and operations must be standardized.

1. According to the corn crop and the target to be controlled, select the appropriate herbicide, and based on the instructions on the label, clarify the product name, formulation, active ingredient content and application rate. When using herbicides, the spray solution should be applied evenly, and walking speed, the width of the manually controlled spray swath, and the pace should also be uniform; working time should not be too long.

2. Master the key technical operating points for herbicide use. Achieve “three accuracy”, “four observations” and “five no-spray”. “Three accuracy”: accurate application timing, accurate application rate, and accurate area of the treated plot. For herbicide use, 2 to 3 sprayer tanks of solution should be sprayed per mu, and application is best done before 8:30 in the morning or after 5:00 in the afternoon; otherwise, herbicide damage will occur. “Four observations”: observe seedling condition, weed condition, weather and soil texture. It is not easy to apply herbicide to seedlings that have not yet rooted or are weak: apply according to the weed species and growth condition; when the temperature is relatively low, use an application rate at the upper limit; use a higher rate on heavy clay soil and a lower rate on sandy soil; do not apply when the soil is dry. “Five no-spray”: do not spray when seedlings are weak or lodging; do not spray in paddy fields when the water is less than 3 cm shallow or when the water depth submerges the heart leaf; do not spray when the field soil is too dry; do not spray during heavy rain or when there is dew on the leaves; do not spray in leaky paddy fields.

3. Apply at the appropriate time. For cornfield herbicides, the generally safe post-emergence period is the 3-5 leaf stage; below the 2-leaf stage or above 6 leaves, not only is herbicide damage likely, but when applied too early, the weeds do not emerge uniformly and the weed control effect is poor; while when applied too late, the weeds are large and the weed control effect is also poor, and herbicides with a long residual period can also easily cause damage to the following crop.
