How to carry out field management during Eucommia ulmoides planting

1. Intertillage and weeding: After Eucommia ulmoides is planted, the root system has not yet taken firm hold, so intertillage should be shallow rather than deep, and weeding should be thorough. If intercropped with crops, it can be carried out together with the intertillage and weeding of the crops. When the young Eucommia ulmoides stand closes its canopy, clearing the stand and one intertillage should be carried out each summer to promote the growth of the young trees.

After Eucommia ulmoides is planted, the root system has not yet taken firm hold, so intertillage should be shallow rather than deep, and weeding should be thorough. If intercropped with crops, it can be carried out together with the intertillage and weeding of the crops. When the young Eucommia ulmoides stand closes its canopy, clearing the stand and one intertillage should be carried out each summer to promote the growth of the young trees. After the Eucommia ulmoides stand matures, clearing the stand once a year is sufficient, and intertillage is not needed. Before the onset of winter, soil should be mounded around the base of the young trees to protect them from the cold.

2. Topdressing:

Topdressing can be carried out together with intertillage and weeding. Spring each year is the peak growth period of Eucommia ulmoides. Apply 1500 kg of barnyard manure and 50 kg of cake fertilizer per mu, placing it in radiating furrows opened around the base of the plants, then cover with soil to cover the fertilizer after application. During the vigorous growth period of Eucommia ulmoides in summer, carry out a second topdressing, applying 2000 kg of barnyard manure, 50 kg of superphosphate, and 200 kg of plant ash per mu, placing it in furrows opened beside the plants, then cover with soil to cover the fertilizer after application. Phosphorus and potassium fertilizers can also be used for foliar topdressing. Irrigation and drainage: After Eucommia ulmoides is planted, it should be watered frequently to keep the planting hole soil moist and favor survival. During the vigorous summer growth season, if drought occurs, water should be applied in time, otherwise the growth of Eucommia ulmoides will be affected. If the rainy season occurs, accumulated water should be drained in time to prevent waterlogging damage.

3. Training and pruning:

Each winter, appropriately prune the side branches on the lower part of the crown to promote thick, straight growth of the main trunk and increase the yield of trunk bark. Prune drooping branches, diseased and insect-damaged branches, and dead branches to make the crown well ventilated and let light through. In combination with division propagation, separate the root-sucker seedlings from the mother plant and plant them with roots in the planting site, prompting the mother plant to grow robustly.
