When to Apply Top Dressing to Jujube Trees? A Detailed Guide to Growing Experience
Top dressing must be applied during the growing season when the jujube tree most needs nutrients. If the timing of top dressing is incorrect, the purpose of top dressing cannot be achieved, and sometimes it even has the opposite effect, reducing jujube yield and quality and wasting labor and fertilizer. According to the characteristics of the phenological phases of jujube trees, top dressing of jujube trees is mainly divided into 4 periods.
(1) Before budbreak (early to mid-April) This top dressing is mainly nitrogen fertilizer, appropriately combined with phosphate fertilizer. Its role is to make jujube trees bud uniformly, grow branches and leaves robustly, and favor flower bud differentiation. For jujube orchards with insufficient base fertilizer application or weak tree vigor, this top dressing is especially important.
(2) Flowering period Apply top dressing before flowering (late May), combined with phosphate fertilizer. The role of this top dressing is to promote flowering and fruit setting and increase the fruit-setting rate. Avoid heavy flower and fruit drop caused by intense nutrient competition due to overlapping phenological phases.
(3) Young fruit period During the young fruit development period (late June to early July), apply top dressing with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizers. Its role is to promote young fruit growth, prevent heavy fruit drop, and increase fruit size.
(4) Rapid fruit growth period During the fruit growth period (early to mid-August), top dressing should be applied with a combination of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizers, appropriately increasing the amount of potassium fertilizer. Its role is to favor fruit size increase and photosynthesis, increase fruit sugar content, improve fruit quality, and help increase stored nutrients in the tree.
