How to prevent and treat jujube witches' broom disease? Essential methods for anyone growing jujube trees
Jujube witches' broom disease is a viral disease caused by mycoplasma-like organisms, transmitted by leafhopper insects such as the round-spotted leafhopper, or through infected root, stem and leaf seedlings or the graft buds and rootstock of grafted seedlings. It is fairly common in affected regions and often becomes the “cancer” of jujube cultivation.
At present there are several prevention and treatment methods with some degree of effectiveness: 1. When propagating jujube seedlings, select root-sucker seedlings from disease-free mother plants, use graft buds from disease-free mother trees, and choose disease-free rootstock. 2. For trees that have already developed the disease, treat them differently according to the severity: for newly infected and mildly affected trees, prune off the diseased branches to reduce the source of infection and control the worsening of the condition; for those with no disease on the whole branch, they should be removed promptly to prevent spread. 3. Chemical treatment (only suitable for mildly affected jujube trees): use hydrochloric acid tetracycline solution (or hydrochloric acid oxytetracycline solution) by injection. Take 4 tablets of ordinary medical tetracycline tablets (or oxytetracycline tablets, 0.25 units/tablet), grind into powder. Take 100 cc (ml) of water, first take 25-30 ml of water, add 1 ml of hydrochloric acid, then add the ground tetracycline powder, shake well, then add the remaining 75 to 70 ml of water, shake well and set aside. When using, first spray the diseased branches with the prepared solution, then on the diseased branches use an IV drip method to slowly inject the prepared solution. 3. Inject the prepared solution into the roots corresponding to the area below the diseased branches. A salt water root-drenching method can also be used. Drench the roots with about 1-3% salt water; this is a common folk method used by the public.
