How to Grow Lilies for Higher Yields? High-Yield Cultivation Tips Shared
The lily, scientific name (Lilium brownii var. viridulum Baker), also known as Qiangshu, Fanjiu, Shandan, Daoxian, Chongmai, Zhongting, Moluo, Chongxiang, Zhongfenghua, Baihesuan, Dashifusuan, Suannaoshu, Yehehua and so on, is a perennial herbaceous bulbous plant of the genus Lilium (scientific name: Lilium) in the family Liliaceae. It originated in China and is mainly distributed in the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, including eastern Asia, Europe and North America. At least 120 species have been found worldwide, 55 of which are native to China. In recent years, many new cultivars have been produced through artificial hybridization, such as Asiatic lilies, Oriental lilies and fire lilies. The bulb is rich in starch, is edible and is also used medicinally.
1. Chemical regulation method. When lily seedlings grow to 18-20 cm tall, carry out chemical regulation: use 20-50 g of the plant growth regulator paclobutrazol per mu, or 10-15 g of chlormequat, or 5-10 g of daminozide (B9), or 5-10 g of mepiquat chloride, choosing any one of them, add 50-70 kg of water and spray evenly on the lily plants. This can make the lily stems thick and strong, enhance stress resistance, and promote bulb formation and growth.
2. Bud removal method to promote stem growth. Except for land kept for seed production, promptly cut off the flower buds when they appear in May-June, so that nutrients are concentrated on bulb growth, which is beneficial for increasing yield.
3. Alum watering method. In early February, before lily seedlings emerge, apply 3000 g of potassium alum or ammonium alum per mu, diluted 1000 times, by watering; in years with heavy rain, apply once more after 7-10 days. In this way, the differentiation and swelling of lily bulbs can be promoted, and the yield can be increased by 10%-40%. Note that applying potassium alum is notably effective on potassium-deficient soil; on nitrogen-deficient soil, applying ammonium alum is better.
4. Topdressing with micronutrient fertilizer method. During the lily growing period, spray foliar micronutrient fertilizers rich in multiple trace elements, such as Lufenwei and Songgang Lusheng, to provide various trace elements for lily growth. This can make lily plants robust, enhance stress resistance, and promote good bulb growth and development, with notable effects in increasing yield and income.
