A Detailed Guide to Scientific Control Methods for Cabbage Root Rot
Cabbage——the natural stomach vegetable. Cabbage is neutral in nature and sweet in taste, non-toxic, and enters the stomach and kidney meridians. Cabbage is one of the best vegetables ever recommended by the World Health Organization, and is also known as the natural “stomach vegetable”. The vitamin K1 and vitamin U it contains can not only fight gastric ulcers, protect and repair gastric mucosal tissue, but also keep gastric cells active and vigorous, reducing the chance of lesions. It helps hormone secretion and breast development. All kinds of cabbage are a good source of potassium. Head cabbage is also extremely rich in vitamin A, calcium and phosphorus. Eating cabbage raw or juicing it fresh (200 to 300 C.C.), taken on an empty stomach, 2 to 3 times a day, gives the best effect. However, head cabbage contains more coarse fiber than Chinese cabbage and it is rougher, so it is hard in texture, and people with poor digestion should not eat too much of it.
Cabbage likes mild, humid conditions and sufficient light. It is relatively cold-tolerant and also able to adapt to high temperatures. The suitable growing temperature is 15-20°C. If the fleshy stem enlargement stage encounters high temperatures above 30°C, the flesh easily becomes fibrous. It is not very strict about soil choice, but it is suitable for planting in clay loam or sandy loam rich in humus. Cabbage seedlings must pass through vernalization at 0-10°C, and then bolt, flower and set fruit under long-day conditions and suitable temperatures.
How to control cabbage root rot?
Main symptoms of cabbage root rot:
The disease occurs at the seedling stage or shortly after transplanting. The epidermis at the base of the stem turns brown and rots, followed by root rot, and diseased plants can be pulled out very easily.
Conditions for the onset of cabbage root rot:
The fungus overwinters as mycelium in seeds and soil. It mostly occurs on cabbage plants cultivated under plastic film mulching in early spring or in small arch sheds or plastic greenhouses. It is a low-temperature, high-humidity disease, and the pathogen spreads with irrigation water.
Scientific control methods for cabbage root rot
1. Seed treatment: Choose excellent varieties, soak the seeds for 4 hours in an 800-fold solution of Kuiwei Antai for disinfection, remove them and rinse twice with clean water, then drain and sprout and sow; or disinfect with 1% salt water.
2. Seedbed soil treatment: Disinfect the seedbed soil with a 1000-fold solution of carbendazim, or treat it by mixing soil with a 1000-fold solution of Kuiwei Antai, or use matrine powder at 1:1000 to control underground pests. The seedbed should be level to facilitate uniform watering later, and the thickness is generally about 10 cm; use organic biological active fertilizer as seedling fertilizer, as it can significantly improve cabbage's resistance to root rot.
3. Sowing and raising seedlings: After sowing the germinated seeds evenly on the seedbed, cover with soil, generally about 1 cm of soil, and sandy loam is suitable for the covering soil. After covering with soil, put on a plastic shed cover to raise the temperature and help seedling emergence. Be careful never to flood-irrigate, to prevent high humidity and low temperature from causing various seedbed diseases.
4. Seedbed management: After the seedlings emerge, sprinkle water in good time to prevent water shortage, but never flood-irrigate. When 30% of the seedlings have emerged, spray the seedbed and seedlings 2-3 times with a 500-fold solution of Kuiwei Antai to prevent damping-off, sudden wilting and root rot, at intervals of 7-10 days. After the seedlings have all emerged and emerged evenly, spray 1-2 times with a 1300-fold solution of Weisheng D, at intervals of 10-15 days, which can promote vigorous seedling growth and prevent disease invasion. After the seedlings grow larger, move them in time, treating each plant as a unit, with a spacing of 2 cun. After moving the seedlings, water by sprinkling, not by flooding. Before transplanting, ventilate and air the seedlings in time to let them harden. One day before transplanting, irrigate once heavily until thoroughly soaked.
5. Transplanting management: At transplanting, spray the seedbed and seedlings once with a 300-fold solution of Kuiwei Antai or a 500-fold solution of 50% Genfuling or other fungicides, to prevent the seedlings from carrying pathogens into the greenhouse. At transplanting, leek and cabbage can be planted in alternating rows, which can reduce cabbage root rot, because leek can produce a strong, special pungent odor that repels insects and kills pathogens.
