When it comes to cilantro, everyone is very familiar with it. It is a vegetable we often eat in daily life, and it can also be added to all kinds of dishes, which makes the dish look more appetizing and taste more fragrant. Therefore, it is very widely used in daily life.

What is cilantro

Cilantro, formerly named: coriander, also known as: fragrant coriander, hu coriander, Latin name: Coriandrum sativum L. An annual or biennial herb of the Apiaceae family and the genus Coriandrum, with a strong odor, 20-100 cm tall. The root is spindle-shaped, slender, with many fine branch roots. The stem is cylindrical, upright, much branched, striped, usually smooth. The basal leaves are stalked; the style is upright when young and bends outward when the fruit is ripe. The fruit is spherical, with the main ridges on the back and the adjacent secondary ridges obvious. The ventral side of the endosperm is concave. The oil ducts are not obvious, or there is 1 located below the secondary ridges. It is native to the Mediterranean region of Europe, and is cultivated in provinces and regions of China including Northeast China, Hebei, Shandong, Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, and Xizang. The stems and leaves are used as a vegetable and seasoning, and have the effect of strengthening the stomach and aiding digestion; the fruit can be used to extract aromatic oil; the fruit is used as medicine and has the effects of dispelling wind, promoting eruption, strengthening the stomach, and eliminating phlegm.

Morphological characteristics of cilantro

It is an annual or biennial herbaceous plant of the genus Yunjiang in the Apiaceae family. In the Shuowen Jiezi it is recorded: “Sui is written as you, and can make the mouth fragrant. Its stem is soft, its leaves are fine, and its root has many fibers, trailing and abundant. Zhang Qian brought the seed back when he was sent to the Western Regions, hence the name hu sui. Sui is the appearance of stems and leaves spreading out. Shi Le tabooed the word hu, so the Jin region called it xiang sui.” Cilantro is native to the area of western Asia, Persia, and Egypt, and was introduced to China by Arabs during the Tang dynasty. Meng Xi's Dietary Materia Medica and Chen Zangqi's Supplement to the Materia Medica gave detailed records of this plant's properties, growth cycle, hydrological environment, and so on.

Management measures for cilantro during high summer temperatures

Cilantro prefers a cool climate and cannot tolerate high temperatures. When the temperature exceeds 30°C, it stops growing. So how can cilantro be grown well in the hot summer?

1. Variety selection

Choose varieties that are heat-tolerant, late in bolting, and fast-growing.

2. Land preparation and fertilization

Choose soil that is relatively fertile, has good water and fertilizer retention, can be irrigated in drought and drained in waterlogging, has good permeability, and has not grown cilantro for more than five years. Continuous cropping must not be used. Apply 4000 kg of decomposed farmyard manure and 100 kg of cake fertilizer per mu. The residues of the previous crop must be removed to reduce the occurrence of pests and diseases. Deeply plow and finely harrow, and make beds. A bed width of 1-1.5 m and a length of 8-10 m is suitable.

3. Seed soaking and germination acceleration

The sowing period for cilantro is not strict. Generally, it can be harvested 40-50 days after sowing. Before sowing, the seeds should be soaked and germinated. The method is: first soak the seeds in clean water for 24-30 hours, then take them out and spread them on a moist, pollution-free hemp sack at a thickness of 2-3 cm, cover with a moist hemp sack, keep the temperature at 20°C-25°C, stir 1-2 times a day, maintain a certain amount of moisture, and after 3-4 days they can sprout and be sown.

4. Broadcasting and seedling protection

In hot summer, cilantro is mainly broadcast-sown. The method is: first sow two beds and leave one bed, take the covering soil prepared for the first sown beds and place it on the reserved bed surfaces on both sides, then irrigate with enough water, and after the water has infiltrated, sow evenly, then cover with 2 cm of soil after sowing. Then sow the remaining empty beds in the same way as the first sown beds. The seeding rate is about 2 kg per mu. After all sowing is completed, carry out one pressing to preserve soil moisture. If the weather is dry and the soil moisture is low, affecting emergence, a light irrigation can be given once.

5. Field management

When the seedlings are 4-5 cm tall, thin them and weed, with a seedling spacing of 2-4 cm. After thinning, combine with irrigation and apply one thin manure water per mu. When the seedlings are 7-8 cm tall, apply the first topdressing. At this time, the fertilization amount should be larger, applying 20-30 kg of ammonium sulfate per mu. Keep the soil moist, water once every 4-5 days, and use shade to lower the temperature. At harvest, thinning can be combined with harvesting in batches, which is beneficial to plant growth.

Cilantro is actually sold all year round in our daily life, but in summer, if the temperature is too high, it is not conducive to its growth. Therefore, if you want to grow cilantro with high yield, you must understand its living preferences, so as to create a better growing environment.
