What cash crops and flowers is Yunnan suitable for growing
Yunnan Province has 7 temperature-zone climate types: north tropical, south subtropical, mid-subtropical, north subtropical, warm temperate, mid-temperate and plateau climate zone. Yunnan's climate combines the features of a low-latitude climate, a monsoon climate and a mountain-plateau climate.
Based on Yunnan's climate, the main cash crops suitable for growing here include: the main crops in Yunnan Province are nine in total: rice, wheat, corn, cotton, soybean, rapeseed, potato, broad bean and sugarcane.
1. Wheat
Wheat is the general name for plants of the wheat genus, a monocotyledon, and a grass-family plant widely grown around the world. The caryopsis of wheat is one of humanity's staple foods; ground into flour, it can be made into bread, steamed buns, biscuits, noodles and other foods; after fermentation it can be made into beer, alcohol, baijiu (such as vodka), or biofuel. Wheat is rich in starch, protein, fat, minerals, calcium, iron, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin A and vitamin C, among others.
Wheat is one of the three major grains and is almost entirely used for food, with only about one sixth used as feed. Mesopotamia is the world's earliest region where wheat was cultivated. In 2010 wheat was the world's second-highest total-output food crop (651 million tons), second only to corn (844 million tons).
2. Cotton
Cotton is the seed fiber of plants in the cotton genus of the mallow family, native to the subtropics. The plant is shrub-like and can grow to 6 m tall when cultivated in tropical regions, generally 1 to 2 m. The flowers are milky white, turning dark red shortly after blooming and then withering, leaving a small green capsule called a cotton boll. Inside the boll are cotton seeds; the fuzz on the seeds grows out from the seed coat and fills the inside of the boll, and when the boll matures it splits open, exposing the soft fibers. The fibers are white or white with a yellow tinge, about 2 to 4 cm long (0.75-1.5 cun), containing about 87-90% cellulose, 5-8% water and 4-6% other substances. The countries with the highest cotton output include China, the United States and India.
3. Rapeseed
Rapeseed, also called oil cabbage or bitter greens, is a plant of the crucifer family, Brassica genus, native to our country; its stems are dark green, its stalks are like those of Chinese cabbage, and it is a crucifer-family variety of Chinese cabbage, with yellow flowers. In agronomy, the various species whose seeds contain oil are collectively called rapeseed. At present the main cultivated (variety) types of rapeseed are: cabbage-type rapeseed, mustard-type rapeseed and kale-type rapeseed.
It is mainly distributed in Anhui, Henan, Sichuan and other places. Rapeseed is nutritious, with a very high vitamin C content. Rapeseed generally grows in relatively humid climates, such as southern China. Rapeseed also has many uses; for example, the flowers can be eaten while still in bud; when the rapeseed flowers are in full bloom they are also a beautiful scenic sight (Hanzhong city in Shaanxi, China has a rapeseed flower sightseeing tourist area); after the flowers wither, the rapeseed can be pressed for oil.
4. Broad bean
Broad bean, also called luohan bean, hu bean, orchid bean, south bean, shu bean or fo bean, is an annual herb of the legume family, Vicia genus. It is a crop used as food, vegetable, feed and green manure. It is native to the Mediterranean coast of Europe, southwestern Asia and North Africa, and is said to have been introduced to the Central Plains from the Western Regions by Zhang Qian of the Western Han dynasty. Broad bean is rich in nutritional value and contains 8 essential amino acids. Its carbohydrate content is 47%-60%; it can be eaten and can also be grown as feed, green manure and a nectar-source plant. It is a crop used as food, vegetable, feed and green manure.
5. Potato
The potato is a perennial herb of the nightshade family whose tubers are edible, and it is the world's fourth most important food crop, after wheat, rice and corn. The potato is also called earth egg, tudou, yangshanyu and so on, and is the tuber of a nightshade-family plant. Together with wheat, rice, corn and sorghum it is known as one of the world's five major crops.
The potato originated in the Andes mountain region of South America, and its earliest artificial cultivation can be traced back to about 8000 to 5000 BC in the southern region of Peru. The main potato-producing countries include China, Russia, India, Ukraine and the United States. China is the country with the highest total potato output in the world.
In 2015, China will launch a strategy to make the potato a staple food, promoting the processing of potatoes into steamed buns, noodles, rice noodles and other staple foods, and the potato will become another staple food besides rice, wheat and corn.
