What conditions should an excellent sunflower variety meet?
It is generally believed that an excellent variety should have the following characteristics:
① High yield per unit area;
② High oil content in oil sunflower seeds.
③ Strong stress resistance;
④ Wide adaptability.
However, when selecting and using hybrid seeds, the following points should also be noted.
(1) The purity of hybrid seeds. The higher the purity, the higher the yield, and vice versa. Therefore, when selecting seeds, be sure to ask clearly about purity to prevent anyone from adulterating them. The purity of a variety can be determined through investigation during the oil sunflower growing period. Varieties with high purity have plants of uniform height, uniform flowering period, and no sterile plants.
(2) Regional differences. Some people believe that as long as a well-known excellent variety is introduced, high yields can be obtained in the introduced region. This view is sometimes correct and sometimes not. When introducing a variety, the similarity between local climatic conditions and those of the source area should be considered, especially accumulated temperature, frost-free period, rainfall, etc., because if the local frost-free period is short (for example, 100 days) and the introduced variety has too long a growth period, the new variety cannot mature normally locally, thereby causing reduced yield. In addition, if one refers to the experience of neighboring villages or neighboring counties (banners) in introducing new varieties, success can often also be achieved.
