Together with Daxuesu, Xiaoxuesu and Tonghai Jianlan, the Cinnabar Orchid is known as one of the “Four Great Traditional Famous Orchids of Yunnan”. Let's take a look below at how to grow the Cinnabar Orchid!

Key points for growing the Cinnabar Orchid

Soil

The Cinnabar Orchid likes well-drained, airy and breathable soil; a dedicated orchid soil can be used.

Light

The Cinnabar Orchid likes sunlight. In summer it should be shaded appropriately, with the shade level controlled at around 60%-75%. In August to September, when the flower buds form, light should be increased. In winter it should receive full sunlight; if kept indoors, it should be placed in a bright spot where direct sunlight comes in.

Temperature

The Cinnabar Orchid is not strict about temperature; it only needs some protection in winter to survive the winter safely, and then it can bloom normally in spring.

Watering

The Cinnabar Orchid likes moisture. During the growing period, keep the potting soil moist, especially in spring. In hot summer weather, water more.

Pests and diseases

The Cinnabar Orchid is prone to brown spot disease in summer and autumn. In summer and autumn, pay attention to using thiophanate-methyl or Duolingjun for prevention and control.

Planting methods for the Cinnabar Orchid

The Cinnabar Orchid should be repotted after flowering in spring, or it can also be repotted in autumn. The shade requirement of the Cinnabar Orchid is slightly less than that of Chunlan Jian; the shade level should be controlled at 6O%-75%. The flower buds form and emerge from the soil in August and September; at this time light should be increased, and in winter it should also receive full sunlight. The cold tolerance of the Cinnabar Orchid is slightly less than that of Chunlan Jian; with a little protection in winter it can safely get through the season and bloom normally in spring. The flowering period of the Cinnabar Orchid is similar to that of Chunlan Jian, and in spring the potting soil should be kept moist. The Cinnabar Orchid is also prone to brown spot disease; in summer and autumn, pay attention to using thiophanate-methyl or carbendazim for prevention and control.

The Cinnabar Orchid plant is robust, with thick and long roots, and is suitable for planting in tall tube-shaped pots or flower pots with five tubes or more. With slightly more seedlings per pot, placed among woods, under trees, in a courtyard or in a hall, its leaves are healthy and lush and its flowers are bright and beautiful, very imposing. The Cinnabar Orchid's flower color is purple-red; brilliant but not gaudy, it can add a festive atmosphere to the home.
