Alternative names for Sichuan pepper: májiāo, shǔjiāo, diǎnjiāo, xiāngjiāo, dàhuājiāo, shānjiāo, Sichuan pepper powder. Let's take a look at the cultivation techniques of Sichuan pepper below.

1. Site Selection

The Sichuan pepper plant is relatively small, with a shallow root distribution and strong adaptability, so it can make full use of idle land such as barren hills, wasteland, roadsides, field edges, and the areas in front of and behind houses for planting Sichuan pepper. Sites such as mountain tops, low-lying areas, wind gaps, places with thin soil layers, exposed rock, or heavy clay are not suitable for planting.

2. Land Preparation for Sichuan Pepper Orchards (Shelterbelts)

To establish a high-yield orchard on flat land, whole-orchard land preparation can be adopted, with deep plowing of 30-50 cm; before plowing, apply sufficient base fertilizer at 4-5 t per mu, then rake level and fine, and dig planting points into large pits 1 m square. When establishing a high-yield orchard on gentle hillsides, horizontal terraces or reverse-slope terraces can be built along contour lines. When planting Sichuan pepper on field ridges, field edges, and similar places, large pits with a diameter of 60 cm or 80 cm can be dug. For strip planting, regardless of the type of planting pit, about 20-25 kg of organic fertilizer should also be mixed in during backfilling. When preparing land on hilly terrain, soil and water conservation must be consistently carried out.

3. Planting Patterns

Field ridge planting: make full use of slope terraces and terrace field ridges in mountainous and hilly areas to plant Sichuan pepper, with a spacing of about 3 m between plants.

Pure Sichuan pepper orchard: to create a pure Sichuan pepper orchard, if planting on flat land, use 3 m row spacing and 2 m plant spacing; if planting on mountainous land, determine plant and row spacing according to the width of the terraces; on complex mountainous terrain, planting can follow the mountain contour.

Mixed planting of Sichuan pepper and trees: Sichuan pepper can be planted mixed with other slow-growing trees, such as walnut and Chinese chestnut; one or two Sichuan pepper plants can be interplanted between plants, or mixed planting can be done in alternate rows.

Living hedge: use Sichuan pepper to create a living hedge; the planting density should be greater than for other patterns, with 30-40 cm row spacing and 20 cm plant spacing, arranged in a triangular configuration, planted in 2 or 3 rows.

4. Planting Density

Sichuan pepper is better planted sparsely than densely. In arid and semi-arid areas, the density after the Sichuan pepper reaches maturity should be within the range of 100-120 plants per mu. In areas with deep soil layers, good soil quality, and moderate rainfall, the mature density is about 60 plants per mu. When first establishing a Sichuan pepper orchard, the row spacing is generally 2 m and the plant spacing 1.5 m; where conditions are good, maintain a row spacing of 4 m and a plant spacing of 1.5 m.

5. Seedling Stage Management

Field planting is key. The survival rate is highest when planting at the time buds just begin to sprout. After planting, water thoroughly, apply topdressing 2-3 times during the growing season, and combine it with watering during drought.

6. Overwintering Management

1. Autumn water and fertilizer management: after the Sichuan pepper tree enters July, stop applying nitrogen fertilizer to prevent excessive growth in the later season. At the same time, base fertilizer should be applied as early as possible in September-October, which helps improve the nutritional level of the tree.

2. Use pruning to control excessive tree vigor: in September-October, take measures such as bending, tucking, and pinching the upright vigorous branches to weaken the growth of vigorous branches. The effect of controlling vigorous trees is obvious. Also spray Hushu Jiangjun at the appropriate time to keep warm and prevent freezing, hinder pathogens from settling on the tree and reproducing, and at the same time improve the tree's cold resistance.

3. Enhance the nutritional level of the tree: in July-August, quick-acting potassium fertilizers such as potassium sulfate can be applied; foliar spray with high-efficiency microfertilizers such as photosynthetic microfertilizer and amino acid chelated fertilizer plus Xin Gao Zhi Mo at 800 times dilution to improve the photosynthetic capacity of the tree. In September-October, foliar spray with a mixed fertilizer solution of 0.5% potassium dihydrogen phosphate + 0.5%-1 jia e urea plus Xin Gao Zhi Mo at 800 times dilution, spraying 2-3 times consecutively every 7-10 days, which can effectively improve the tree's nutrient reserves and cold resistance.

4. Strengthen overwintering protection management: adopt effective protective measures such as mounding soil around the trunk and mounding soil around the entire seedling to strengthen tree protection; apply Hushu Jiangjun to the trunk to keep warm and prevent freezing, or protect by whitewashing the trunk, using a protective agent made of 5 parts quicklime + 0.5 part sulfur + 2 parts salt + 0.1 part vegetable oil + 20 parts water to coat the trunk.

5. Spray antifreeze: during the overwintering period, spray the tree with a 1%-1.25% antifreeze solution, which can effectively prevent freezing damage to the branches.

7. Fertilization Management

1. Expanded-hole fertilization: after the soil thaws in early spring, deeply dig the soil around the root system of the Sichuan pepper tree to 30-50 cm, and apply about 30 kg of organic fertilizer per plant; at the budding stage in mid-April and after fruit harvest in late July, apply 0.4 kg of standardized fertilizer per plant each time. After fertilization, water thoroughly in a timely manner.

2. Foliar fertilization: use a mixed solution of 3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate and 0.5% urea, and apply foliar fertilizer 6 times each year: spray the first time at the flowering stage, the second time 10 days after flowering, the third time after another 10-day interval, and once each in early to mid-July and after fruit harvest.

Mulching to increase temperature: Mulching has a good effect of preserving moisture and increasing temperature, and can generally raise the ground temperature by about 3°C, which is beneficial to root development and growth. Mulching should be carried out promptly after expanded-hole fertilization. Along the tree row, make the soil fine and dry, slightly higher near the trunk, and cover with film slightly larger than the outer edge of the canopy. Compact the junction of two pieces of film with soil, spread the film as flat as possible and close to the ground, and seal the surroundings tightly with soil. At the end of April, add a 5 cm thick layer of fine soil on top of the film, which can prevent weed growth and extend the service life of the film.

Pruning for rejuvenation: In summer, prune promptly while harvesting Sichuan pepper. For weak trees, cut off some large branches and diseased and pest-infested branches, then in autumn remove additional excess large branches, finally retaining 5-7 main branches per plant; at the same time, appropriately thin out dense branches within the canopy, generally not exceeding 25% of branches removed, and cut back some weak branches to vigorous buds. For moderate-vigor trees, medium and short branches are generally not shortened; thinning is the main approach, and care should be taken to protect the terminal buds; long fruiting branches should be appropriately shortened, retaining large buds.

Harvest time and method: The fruit ripening period of Sichuan pepper is generally around the Beginning of Autumn to the End of Heat. When Sichuan pepper is ripe, the peel is purplish red or light red, the suture line of the peel protrudes, a small number split open, and the seeds are black and glossy. A rich numbing aroma can be smelled. This is the most suitable harvest period. The fruit is generally picked by hand or cut with scissors. Picking fruit clusters on strong branches: in the first leaf axil below the large pepper cluster there is a plump bud; this bud is the fruiting bud for the next year and must be properly protected. When picking the pepper cluster, be sure not to remove this axillary bud along with it, so as not to affect next year's yield. Picking fruit clusters on weak branches: the first bud below the fruit cluster on a weak branch is not well developed; the second or third bud is more robust. When picking, the second or third bud should be retained, otherwise next year's yield will be affected.
