Rose Planting Techniques, Potted Cultivation Methods and Precautions
SummaryTemperature: The suitable growing temperature for roses is around 20-30 degrees. Water and fertilizer: Apply sprouting fertilizer, post-bloom fertilizer and autumn base fertilizer in a timely and reasonable manner. Management: Weed in a timely manner; from late autumn to before the ground freezes each year, carry out deep digging and expanded hole treatment, and apply an appropriate amount of topdressing at the same time. Pruning: From late April to early May each year, cut off dead old branches or diseased branches. Pests and diseases: Actively prevent and control common pests and diseases, and spray the roses with pesticide once every so often.
When I went to pick roses as a child, if I was not careful, I would get scratched by the thorns on them. That is why people often talk about thorny roses. Roses are very beautiful, but they are not easy to grow. Now let us take a look together at how to grow beautiful and healthy roses!
I. Rose Planting Techniques
1. Maintain a suitable temperature: The suitable temperature for roses is around 20 to 30 degrees, so a suitable temperature should be maintained to benefit rose growth.
2. Water and fertilizer management: Water and fertilizer are directly related to rose yield. At least three fertilizer applications should be guaranteed: sprouting fertilizer, mainly nitrogen fertilizer; post-bloom fertilizer, applied after the flowering period ends, mainly nitrogen fertilizer with phosphorus and potassium fertilizer added; and autumn base fertilizer, applied after leaf fall and before the soil freezes, with earlier application being preferable, mainly organic fertilizer.
3. Weed frequently: When the rose soil has been in place for a certain period, remember to weed the roses more often. From late autumn to before the ground freezes each year, carry out deep digging and expanded hole treatment, and fertilize at the same time.
4. Pruning: From late April to early May each year, cut off dead old branches or diseased branches and remove them from the garden. Cut 7- to 8-year-old old branches at 20 to 30 cm above the ground, or dig out the entire plant, cut off the old branches and diseased branches, and divide and replant separately, making sure not to plant on the same spot repeatedly.
5. Prevent pests: There are very many pests that harm roses, so pest control should be strengthened, and the roses should be sprayed with pesticide once every so often.
II. Precautions for Potted Rose Planting
1. When roses have just been planted in a pot, they must not be placed in the sun, but they should still be placed in a place with good light.
2. When just planted, do not use fertilizer in the soil. Wait until the seedlings have recovered and the branches and leaves have grown somewhat, then gradually use fertilizer. Fertilizer must not be used too much at one time, to avoid burning the seedlings. Strictly follow the principle of light fertilizer applied frequently.
3. After the seedlings are planted, the first watering must be done very generously, to prevent the upper soil from being watered wet while the lower soil is still dry.
III. Environmental Requirements for Rose Planting
1. Soil: The planting soil should be loose and aerated, rich in organic matter, slightly acidic, and have a granular structure.
2. Temperature: The suitable growing temperature for roses is 22 to 25 degrees during the day, not exceeding 35 degrees, and maintained at 12 to 15 degrees at night. High temperatures above 30 degrees can cause temporary wilting. Although it is not fatal, the plant undergoes physiological disorder, seriously affecting growth, and greatly affecting growth and development in the next stage; at the same time, the number of petals decreases, forming open-centered flowers.
3. Light: Roses originated in temperate zones and like sunlight. They grow poorly in shaded places. More than 6 hours of light per day is required for normal growth and flowering, but in the hot summer season, this can be reduced to 4 to 5 hours.
4. Humidity: The relative humidity should preferably be 65% to 70%. Low humidity of 40% or less affects flower color and may even cause the outer petals to scorch, and it is suitable for the occurrence and spread of red spider mites and lepidopteran pests.
IV. Common Pests, Diseases and Control Methods of Roses
1. Powdery mildew. It mostly occurs on young leaves, and other old leaves, flower stems, receptacles and even branches are also commonly infected. Control methods: Spray regularly, using myclobutanil 600-fold solution, chlorothalonil 800-fold solution and other agents for control. Each spraying, along with frequent spraying of water on the leaves, can effectively reduce the occurrence of powdery mildew. Cut off diseased branches and leaves as soon as possible to reduce opportunities for further spread.
2. Downy mildew. It mainly harms leaves, new shoots, stems, flower stalks and petals. Control methods: Choose disease-resistant varieties and take careful care, keep relative humidity below 85%, pay attention to ventilation, and do not apply excessive or one-sided nitrogen fertilizer. At the first onset, promptly spray 72% Kelu and similar products.
3. Aphids. Aphids occur all year round and cause damage when it is dry. Control methods: Spraying various insecticides all has relatively good control effects. The key spraying sites are the growing points and the undersides of leaves. Commonly used agents include Yashijing and others. Dichlorvos fumigation can also be used with better effect, but it must not be used after flowering.
4. Red spider mites. Red spider mites absorb chlorophyll from the leaves, reducing the efficiency of rose photosynthesis, and spread rapidly, quickly damaging the leaves and stopping plant development. Control methods: In the early stage of occurrence, spray with 600-fold solution of Manjisi, or use 1000~1500-fold solution of Ruimanjing for spray control, with good effect.
