With the development of urbanization, a large rural labor force has moved to the cities, and the mountain delicacies in the rural mountains are no longer picked by anyone, yet people's longing for the delicious taste of mountain delicacies still continues. In the current era when large areas of land are left barren, planting bamboo shoots, this taste of the mountains, is a choice for rural people to get rich.

New Bamboo Shoot Planting Techniques

1. Selection of the bamboo garden site and land preparation.

① Site selection: For the establishment of a Huangtian bamboo (Acidosasa edulis) plantation, one should choose mountain land, hills, plains, alluvial polder land, tidal flat land, and open space in front of and behind houses with convenient transportation, a slope of less than 15 degrees, and an altitude below 800 m. The soil should be deep and loose, fertile and moist, and acidic or slightly acidic sandy soil or loam.

② Land preparation: Huangtian bamboo is a scattered bamboo species, and its shoot emergence and forest formation mainly depend on the growth of underground rhizomes. Huangtian bamboo afforestation generally adopts full reclamation land preparation. Before afforestation, first remove weeds, shrubs, tree stumps, stones, and other objects in the garden, reclaim the land to a depth of about 30 cm, and dig holes according to the planned planting number. Hole specifications: 60X60X50 cm. Apply 1 kg of fertilizer per hole, or 25-50 kg of base fertilizer, organic fertilizer, and barnyard manure, mix well with soil, and backfill into the hole.

2. Selection of mother bamboo. Choose Huangtian bamboo with a diameter at breast height of 2-3 cm, 1-2 years old, low and short branches, luxuriant branches, no pests or diseases, and robust growth as mother bamboo. When digging up mother bamboo, leave 20 cm of the incoming rhizome and 40 cm of the outgoing rhizome, pay attention to protecting the rhizome buds and rhizome roots, and never damage the screw tip. The mother bamboo base should carry enough original soil. After the mother bamboo is dug up, keep 5-7 whorls of branches. Cut off the bamboo tip, and the cut should be smooth.

3. Planting key points

① Planting season: Huangtian bamboo can be planted in all four seasons, but early spring and the plum rain season are the best planting seasons.

② Planting density: The planting density is generally 55-110 plants per mu. The number of planted plants can be determined according to the source of mother bamboo and economic conditions.

③ Planting method: For transplanting and afforestation of Huangtian bamboo, three key points must be mastered well. First, after the mother bamboo is transported to the afforestation site, it must be planted in time; second, before planting, properly trim the hole and backfill topsoil, then place the mother bamboo into the hole and let the rhizome roots spread naturally. Note that the lower part of the bamboo base should be in close contact with the cushion soil, so that the depth of the mother bamboo base is 3-5 cm deeper than the original burial depth, and then backfill the hole soil layer by layer from bottom to top. Firm the bamboo base so that the rhizome and soil are closely combined; third, when planting, water thoroughly to settle the roots, then cover with subsoil, forming a steamed bun shape. For mountain afforestation, it is best to choose cloudy and windless weather.

Bamboo Shoot Fertilization Techniques

1. Bamboo generally grows on hillside land and has a relatively small fertilizer requirement, but bamboo forests whose main harvest is bamboo shoots have a very large fertilizer requirement. The nutrients needed for bamboo growth must be supplemented in time in order to harvest more high-quality bamboo shoots.

2. For bamboo forests harvested for bamboo shoots, there are generally four fertilizations each year. The first is the rhizome-growth and bamboo-growth fertilizer in May-June each year, applying 60-80 kg of biological organic fertilizer per mu. The second is the shoot bud differentiation fertilizer in August-September, applying 100-150 kg of biological organic fertilizer per mu. The third is the shoot gestation fertilizer in November-December, applying 300-400 kg of biological organic fertilizer per mu. The fourth is the shoot emergence fertilizer in April of the following year, applying 80-100 kg of biological organic fertilizer per mu. Bamboo shoots are topdressed by trench application, plant application, or base application.

3. For newly planted bamboo forests, diluted human and livestock manure or urea can also be poured several times near the bamboo plants between spring and summer to promote root group development and shoot emergence and new rhizome growth. In autumn, combine weeding and loosening the soil, apply barn manure or compost, and turn it into the soil. After the forest is established, each year after spring shoot harvesting is completed, use about 1000 kg of human and livestock manure per mu, apply it into the holes left by digging bamboo shoots, and open holes in other positions for fertilization so that fertilizer is distributed evenly throughout the forest.

Irrigation and Drainage for Bamboo Shoot Planting

In southern regions, during the plum rain period and between summer and autumn when there are typhoons and rainstorms, drainage work must be done well to prevent water accumulation in low-lying areas from rotting the rhizomes. In case of autumn drought, irrigate in time to prevent the soil from being too dry, which would hinder the formation and expansion of shoot buds and affect the bamboo shoot yield of the coming year. In areas with little rainfall, special attention must be paid to irrigation, especially during spring shoot emergence or summer rhizome growth, and before the soil freezes in winter.

Pest and Disease Control of Bamboo Shoots

1. Silvicultural technical control

① Maintain the ecological environment: Protect the forest environment around the bamboo forest, enrich the species resources of the bamboo forest biological community, form a reasonable food web chain, and stabilize and promote the balance of the ecosystem.

② Strengthen bamboo forest management: Adopt winter reclamation and summer weeding to destroy the overwintering and oversummering sites of harmful organisms and reduce the population of harmful organisms. Optimize the bamboo forest structure, scientifically fertilize and irrigate, promote bamboo forest (shoot) growth, and improve the bamboo forest's resistance and tolerance to harmful organisms.

③ Bamboo forest cleanup: Timely clean and remove bamboo shoots, branches, leaves, and culms damaged by diseases and pests, as well as old, weak, residual, and inferior bamboo, remove sources of pests and diseases and transmission sources in the forest, and improve the bamboo forest environment.

2. Physical control

① Use the phototaxis of pests for trapping and killing. For example, in bamboo forests, use frequency-vibration trapping lamps and other methods to trap and kill leaf-eating pests such as notodontid moths, tussock moths, and snout moths.

② Use the chemotaxis of pests for trapping and killing. In bamboo forests, use sugar-vinegar liquid, sex pheromones, fishy odor, or mix appropriate stomach-poison pesticides into foods such as wheat bran and cake fertilizer to trap and kill bamboo shoot pests during the shoot period, such as bamboo shoot flies.

③ Use the latent habits of pests to artificially set up conditions for pests to lurk and attract pests to lurk or overwinter, and then kill the pests.

Since it is bamboo shoot planting, one certainly cannot just let nature take its course and leave it alone after planting, because human contrivance can never compare with nature's flawless creation. To grow a satisfactory taste of the mountains, one must spend effort and thought on planting techniques. This is a question that growers need to consider.
