Cacti were among the earliest succulents cultivated in China; back when most succulents had not yet become popular in the country, cacti had already settled into many people's homes. The white sand cactus is a relatively later variety among cacti, and because of its unique appearance it is deeply loved by people.

How to Grow the White Sand Cactus Succulent So It Quickly Fills Its Pot

1. Potting soil: The soil for growing the white sand cactus should be rich in humus and have good air permeability and drainage. We can mix leaf mold and sandy soil, and place some crushed stone at the bottom of the pot. Only when the roots are well protected will the growth of the white sand cactus be promoted and will it quickly fill its pot.

2. Watering: The white sand cactus is drought-tolerant. Usually, watering it thoroughly once is enough. Do not water when the soil is not dry, and do not let water accumulate, otherwise the white sand cactus will grow slowly due to lack of oxygen, let alone fill its pot.

3. Light: The growth of any plant is inseparable from sunlight, because many of the nutrients plants need for growth are obtained through photosynthesis. To make the white sand cactus quickly fill its pot, we should give it enough sunlight when growing it, but in summer do not put it under direct sunlight to bake, as that would be counterproductive.

4. Temperature: The suitable growing temperature for the white sand cactus is around 20°C. Try to maintain this temperature when growing it. In summer, pay attention to shading, and in winter, pay attention to moving it indoors to prevent freezing. But do not let the temperature be too high in winter either; winter is the dormant period of the white sand cactus, so do not go against its growth rhythm.

5. Ventilation: If you want the white sand cactus to quickly fill its pot, you must also pay attention to its ventilation. Poor ventilation not only affects the growth rate of the white sand cactus but can also cause rot disease, causing moderate to severe damage to the white sand cactus plant.

6. Pests and diseases: The white sand cactus generally does not get sick and fills its pot relatively easily, but if we do not pay attention to ventilation, or water too much or too little, diseases will appear, generally leaf rot and scorched leaf disease. Once they appear, adjust the growing method in time and remove all the rotten leaves cleanly.

White Sand Cactus Growing Methods and Precautions

The white sand cactus relatively likes an environment with sufficient light and requires good ventilation. It likes a somewhat dry environment and has fairly good shade tolerance and cold tolerance. However, the white sand cactus is relatively afraid of water accumulation and strong light.

In winter, pay attention: the white sand cactus must be kept warm so that it will not be frostbitten.

Spring Care for the White Sand Cactus

In spring, the white sand cactus begins to revive, and at this time it should be cared for reasonably. Starting in April, the white sand cactus can be moved outdoors to get some sun; be careful not to water it.

As the temperature and light change, the white sand cactus plant will turn dark red and begin to grow flower buds. In the early stage of flower bud growth, it still cannot be watered. When the buds grow to 1cm long, then water, and it will probably bloom very soon.

Note that if the white sand cactus is watered before the flower buds have grown well, it will lead to a consequence: the flower buds that have already grown will shrink, and offsets will grow on the plant. Only the larger flower buds can bloom.

Therefore, in spring, the white sand cactus should be watered only when the flower buds have grown steadily. This point is crucial.

What to Do If the White Sand Cactus Does Not Bloom

For care of the white sand cactus in summer and autumn, it is the same as for other cacti. In winter, the white sand cactus begins a long sleep, and watering should be stopped, keeping the soil dry. Place it indoors and keep the indoor temperature between 5°C and 10°C. Only if the white sand cactus gets enough sleep will it bloom. If the indoor temperature is high, it will stop the white sand cactus from sleeping, and then the white sand cactus will not produce brilliant flowers.

After spring begins, in northern regions, move it outdoors to get sun in mid-April, and do not water it. As the temperature rises and the light intensity increases, the white sand cactus will turn dark red, and the flower buds will gradually grow. In the early stage of the flower buds, it cannot be watered. After watering, the flowers will turn green, and after 2 weeks the white sand cactus will produce brilliant flowers. If you water before the flower buds have developed properly, the white sand cactus will shrink after blooming. Only the large ones will bloom.

The care method for the white sand cactus has certain similarities with the care methods for many succulents, because the cactus itself is a variety with very strong survival ability, so as long as it is given appropriate light and water accumulation is avoided, it can survive very well.
