Polygonatum odoratum planting methods: home cultivation and precautions
Polygonatum odoratum (Solomon's seal) is a shade-loving, cold-tolerant plant, and it is currently distributed in many parts of our country. The stems of Polygonatum odoratum are relatively long, the leaves are green, and it blooms, usually with small white flowers that look like little bells, very beautiful. Because of its high value, many people want to plant it.
Polygonatum odoratum planting methods
1. Land selection: Choose land with low soil, air and water pollution, hilly terrain at an altitude of 100—1200 m, a slope of less than 25 degrees, deep soil layers, fertile and loose soil, good drainage, and neutral or slightly acidic soil as the planting site for Polygonatum odoratum. Polygonatum odoratum is not suitable for continuous cropping, otherwise problems such as increased pests and diseases and decreased yield will occur, so continuous cropping must be avoided.
2. Seedling selection: Choose the high-quality Polygonatum odoratum variety Zhushiwei (Pig Dung Tail), which is robust, free of pests and diseases, and free of injuries.
3. Land preparation and fertilization: For the selected land, after the previous crop is harvested, apply 150 kg/mu of quicklime and 200 g/mu of soil insect killing agents such as Dichongguang, and immediately plow (to a depth of about 30 cm), remove weeds, and expose the soil to the sun (this point is very important and is one of the keys to ensuring high yield of Polygonatum odoratum). Before planting, break up the soil clods, divide into beds and open furrows (bed width 1.5—2 m), level and refine the soil, and apply sufficient base fertilizer, applying 2500 kg/mu of pig and cattle manure.
4. Planting: Select seedlings with undamaged buds and robust bodies, and plant from July 25 to August 25 each year on a sunny day or a sunny day after rain when the dryness and moisture are suitable. Before planting, they must be sterilized and disinfected with drugs such as thiophanate-methyl (diluted with water at the conventional concentration, soaked for 2~5 minutes), and planted reasonably (there are two methods: the oblique arrangement method and the flat arrangement method, with the oblique arrangement method being more common. In the oblique arrangement method, the end of the seed rhizome with the terminal bud faces upward, the tail faces downward, and it is arranged into the planting furrow at a certain angle to the ground, with a density of 30cm X 8.3cm and a depth of 6—7 cm.
5. Mulching: After Polygonatum odoratum is planted, it must immediately be covered with rice straw, corn stalks, thatch or other materials to a thickness of 6—7 cm, and a thin layer of soil should be covered over this layer of straw.
Home cultivation methods for Polygonatum odoratum
1. Environmental requirements. The characteristics of Polygonatum odoratum are cold tolerance, shade tolerance and moisture tolerance, and it does not like windy conditions or direct strong sunlight. Because Polygonatum odoratum likes a cool climate, it is best to plant it in a sheltered, sunny place. At the same time, pay attention to the drainage of the flower pot, and choose fertile, loose sandy loam for the flower soil. Division propagation method for Polygonatum odoratum
2. Autumn is the best time to plant Polygonatum odoratum, and it will sprout in March-April of the following year. The rhizomes of Polygonatum odoratum survive for a relatively long time, reaching 3-4 years, after which they begin to rot. The division propagation of Polygonatum odoratum mainly relies on rhizomes, cutting them into small sections about 3 to 7 cm long and planting them in flower soil at a depth of 6 cm. During the period from sprouting to becoming seedlings, growth is slow. In early summer, as the temperature rises, the stems and leaves grow rapidly, and flower buds and flowers appear. Usually in the high-temperature season of July, the root system of Polygonatum odoratum grows faster, while the aboveground part grows slowly.
3. Planting can be carried out in spring and autumn. Each section of rhizome used for planting must retain more than 2 nodes. After planting, water thoroughly and place in a cool place. During the growth period of Polygonatum odoratum, fertilization is needed 2~3 times. Organic fertilizer is recommended.
Precautions for Polygonatum odoratum
1. Winter cold protection. Although Polygonatum odoratum is cold-tolerant, because the weather is too cold in winter, attention should still be paid to cold protection to avoid freezing the plant so that it cannot grow.
2. Fertilization and topdressing. Polygonatum odoratum likes fertile soil, so it should be fertilized on time and in the right amount to supplement sufficient nutrients and benefit plant growth. Not only should fertilizer be applied, but attention should also be paid to topdressing. During the seedling stage, special attention should be paid to topdressing. However, note that if sufficient base fertilizer has been applied, there is no need for further topdressing, so as to avoid burning the roots.
Pest and disease control for Polygonatum odoratum
1. Polygonatum odoratum mainly has diseases such as leaf spot, root rot and gray leaf spot. Pay attention to spraying drugs for prevention and control.
2. Pests include: grub pests. The control method is to use 90% crystalline trichlorfon at 1000~1500 times dilution to pour and irrigate the soil around the roots until the pests are killed.
There are still some differences between the planting techniques of Polygonatum odoratum and the methods of home cultivation, but both require choosing soil suitable for growth, and later management also needs to be strengthened, especially pest and disease control work, which must be done well. Only in this way can the growth of Polygonatum odoratum be ensured.
