How to Grow the Fushouyu Succulent? Detailed Guide to Cultivation Methods and Precautions
Fushouyu is a multi-headed succulent plant, and it is currently distributed in many places in our country. Fushouyu has high ornamental value and also blooms, so it is deeply loved by consumers. After many people buy it and take it home, they are not very clear about how to grow it. Let's take a look together below!
How to Grow the Fushouyu Succulent
1. Repotting: Repot once every 2 years. When repotting, use a mixture of leaf mold, potting soil and coarse sand, and add a small amount of cow dung or bone meal. Note that Fushouyu has few and shallow roots. After repotting, place a layer of pebbles on the surface of the potting soil, which is both attractive and provides support.
2. Watering: Keep the potting soil moist during the growing season. During high summer temperatures, shade appropriately and reduce watering. After the weather turns cool in autumn, keep the potting soil slightly moist, and in winter keep the potting soil slightly dry.
3. Fertilizing: Fertilize once every half month during the growing season, using decomposed liquid fertilizer or special organic fertilizer for succulents. Stop fertilizing after flowering in autumn.
Cultivation Methods for the Fushouyu Succulent Plant
1. Potting soil selection. For potted Fushouyu, a small flower pot can be chosen during the seedling stage, filled with loose, fertile, well-drained sandy soil, and a little base fertilizer can be added. During the growth process of Fushouyu, the plant keeps growing larger, the nutrients in the soil become insufficient, and a pot that is too small will also restrict root growth, so the pot can be turned and changed every spring.
2. Water and fertilizer management. Fushouyu is relatively afraid of waterlogging and has drought tolerance. Therefore, when watering, the amount of water should be moderate, keeping the potting soil moist. It is better to water less than to water too much, so as to avoid water accumulation in the potting soil. During the growing seasons in spring and autumn, Fushouyu can be given decomposed dilute liquid fertilizer once every half month to ensure sufficient nutrients, make the plant grow vigorously, and promote flowering. But note that fertilizer and water must not be excessive, otherwise the plant will become leggy and flowering will decrease. In summer and winter, because the temperature is too high or too low, fertilizing should be stopped and the amount of watering reduced.
3. Light and temperature. Fushouyu likes a moderate environment that is warm and sunny. The suitable temperature for growth is between 18°C and 25°C. It is not cold-tolerant and is afraid of high temperatures. Spring and autumn are the growing seasons for Fushouyu, and the temperature and light are also relatively suitable, so it can be exposed to more sunlight. In summer, the sunlight is strong and the temperature is high, so shading is needed and it should be kept in a cool, ventilated place. In winter, the temperature is relatively low, so it can be kept indoors in a place with relatively strong sunlight, and the temperature should be kept within a certain range.
Precautions for Growing the Fushouyu Succulent Plant
In spring, Fushouyu will undergo skin shedding, and there will be a layer of white dead leaves on the surface. At this time, water should be controlled appropriately to let it slowly recover.
Pest and Disease Control for Fushouyu
1. Red spider mite. It sucks the sap of young stems and leaves with its mouthparts. The damaged leaves show yellow-brown spots or wither and fall off, and these scars remain forever. Generally speaking, you can check whether there are spider webs on the back of the leaves, and whether there are very small red/white/dark insects. If there are, it is usually red spider mite.
Control methods: By increasing environmental humidity, spread can be reduced and avoided. It can be killed by absorption with 40% dicofol 1000-1500 times solution, or abamectin.
2. Scale insects. The scope of damage is very wide. They suck the sap of stems and leaves, causing poor growth of the plant, and in severe cases withering and death. Their peak occurrence period is earlier than that of red spider mite, and they often reproduce in large numbers in early spring. But there is also an easily controlled aspect to their damage, namely that they often concentrate on only a few plants. Sometimes one plant is covered with scale insects, while a neighboring plant has not a single one.
Control methods: When the number is small, they can be removed with a brush. In addition, they can also be sprayed and killed with a 800-1000 times solution of Supracide. Mixing a certain amount of carbofuran into the potting soil has a preventive effect, but the efficacy only lasts 3 months.
The cultivation methods for Fushouyu are largely similar to those for general succulents, and can be started from aspects such as fertilizer and water, temperature, and soil. When growing it, be sure to pay attention to the control of water and fertilizer. In the later stage of cultivation, pest and disease control work also needs to be strengthened. Only in this way can its growth be ensured.
