What month does narcissus bloom, and how should it be handled after blooming?
Narcissus is a very common flower. Its bulbs look like garlic, but its flowers are very small, fresh and bright, and carry a wafting fragrance, making it deeply loved by flower enthusiasts. Generally, flower lovers grow narcissus mainly looking forward to the time it blooms, so do you know how long narcissus usually needs to be grown before it blooms? Will narcissus bloom again after it has flowered?
When does narcissus bloom (which month)
1. Blooming time
Narcissus, also known as the Fairy of the Waves, is different from many flowers in that it has the growth characteristics of growing in autumn, blooming in winter, and going dormant in summer. Under normal circumstances it blooms around the Spring Festival; at the earliest it blooms in January, and with proper care the flowering period can last all the way to March.
2. How long it takes to bloom
Narcissus is grown in water and needs the water changed once a day, then once every 2-3 days, and once a week after the flower buds have formed. The normal growing temperature for narcissus is 10-15°C. With normal water culture, it will bloom in 45-50 days, and the flowering period lasts more than a month. If bad weather occurs before or after flowering, with temperatures fluctuating up and down and insufficient light, human intervention is needed: control the room temperature and use fluorescent lamps to supplement light to promote flowering.
How to handle narcissus after it blooms
1. Bury the bulbs
Narcissus is a perennial plant; in fact it can be considered a bulb plant, and if the bulbs are buried in soil they can continue to grow. The plot we choose should be sheltered from the wind and facing the sun, and the soil should be relatively deep. Then the operation to carry out is to build relatively high ridges and place them in the soil, and the leaves above should be left to persist on their own. After one month, the leaves will be in a dry and dormant state, so at this point take the bulbs out of the soil, then cut off their fine, fragmented roots, and cut off the yellow leaves along the base, then bury the bulbs again, keeping the depth at 10 cm, and use rotted fertilizer liquid or manure, then just level it out.
2. Dig up the bulbs
After burying them, the next work is maintenance and management. Ordinarily, as long as you pay attention to providing abundant nutrients and at the same time keep the soil moist, and of course we must not let water accumulate, the bulbs can grow well and get bigger. By November and December, when we dig them out, we will find that the previous bulbs have already rotted and become empty, but there will still be some bulbs around them. After digging out those bulbs with relatively large buds, we wash off the dirt, remove the surface soil, then place them in the sun for a few hours, then carve a "cross"-shaped cut on top, keeping its scales from being damaged, and that is enough, so that both the buds and the leaves can grow out. After that we soak it in water for a day, wash away the sticky liquid from the cut, and then it can be grown well. After 3 days, white fibrous roots can grow from its base, and it will gradually sprout. As for the not-so-large bulbs, we do not rush to deal with them; let them stay in the soil for one year, and then in the second year, when they have grown relatively sturdy, dig them out and grow them.
Methods to force narcissus to bloom
If narcissus is given normal care, the methods that can be used to force it to bloom include increasing light and temperature: during the daytime, place the narcissus outdoors in the sunlight, or place it in a spot indoors with ample light, until it blooms.
You can also use the method of raising the temperature with lights: cover the narcissus pot with a transparent plastic cover and shine a light on it, which can raise the temperature inside the pot. In addition, heating devices can also be used, such as a hair dryer or an electric heater; using this warm air to blow over the narcissus plant can make it bloom and keep blooming for several days. But be careful not to let the hair dryer or similar devices damage the narcissus plant.
You can also use warm water to raise the temperature: add a small amount of warm water to the narcissus pot, which can raise the water temperature somewhat and promote flowering.
Should the bulbs be thrown away after narcissus has bloomed?
Many people, when growing narcissus, after enjoying its beautiful flower form, feel that the narcissus can no longer bloom again, so they throw away the bulbs of the narcissus that has already bloomed.
In fact, there is no need to throw them away at all. Narcissus itself is a perennial plant and can reproduce by means of its bulbs. A narcissus that has already bloomed can still use its bulbs to continue growing, reproducing and blooming. However, note that after continued cultivation it may not bloom the next year; it needs 2-4 years of care before it can bloom.
In our lives, many people like to grow narcissus, but most people, after enjoying the narcissus flowers, directly throw away the bulbs, thinking that the narcissus will not bloom again. In fact, if the bulbs continue to be grown, they can still continue to reproduce and bloom!
