A Detailed Guide to the Cultivation Methods and Precautions for Potted Lucky Bamboo
In recent years, Lucky Bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana) has become very popular among consumers on the market. It not only has a certain ornamental value, but also has a strong air-purifying effect. When many people grow Lucky Bamboo, they do not really understand its cultivation techniques, and some problems can arise. So how exactly should it be grown to make it grow well?
Potted Lucky Bamboo Cultivation Methods
1. Choosing a flower pot. Lucky Bamboo can be grown in pots made of clay, plastic, porcelain, or ceramic. Lucky Bamboo can be planted in pots with a diameter of 12—24 cm.
2. Preparing the potting soil. Lucky Bamboo is suited to growing in soil rich in humus and fertile. For household soil mixing, the following formulas are generally used: garden soil : leaf mold = 5:5; peat soil : leaf mold : sand = 6:3:1.
3. Temperature: If it is grown in a relatively warm place, then there is basically no need to worry; it can grow all year round. However, if it is a place with high altitude or high latitude, then attention is needed, especially when winter arrives. When the temperature begins to drop in late autumn, it is essential to protect it from the cold.
4. Light: It is best to place it in a spot with diffused light, not too shady, and not in direct light. In summer, if the light feels too strong, shade it appropriately.
5. Fertilizer: When the plant first begins to root, apply a small amount of compound fertilizer, so that its leaves will be glossy. In addition, a small amount of nutrient solution can be applied every three weeks.
6. Lucky Bamboo is not considered a water-loving plant, so during the growing process, attention must be paid to water control. In summer, because the weather is relatively hot, it needs to be watered once a day. If it is winter, then it is recommended to water about once every one week; the frequency should not be too frequent.
Precautions for Growing Lucky Bamboo
1. The branches and leaves of Lucky Bamboo tend to grow wildly and endlessly. If not dealt with, this will affect the ornamental effect, so when growing Lucky Bamboo at home, it should be pinched back in time, and water should be properly controlled to manage the growth of Lucky Bamboo.
2. Lucky Bamboo should not be placed next to a TV, fan, or air conditioner, and should not be exposed to cold drafts. Otherwise, the leaves are very likely to turn yellow and wilt, losing their luster.
How to Repot Lucky Bamboo
1. Prepare a new flower pot and growing medium, disinfect them, and set them aside for use.
2. Wait for a sunny, warm, windless morning or evening, and prepare to begin repotting.
3. Prepare a large bucket of water; rainwater or tap water that has been left standing for several days can be used.
4. Fully place the new pot into the water and let it absorb water, to prevent it from taking moisture away from the growing medium.
5. Take the new pot out of the water, pour out the water inside, and set it in place. Lay a layer of small stones or small ceramic pieces at the bottom to increase the growing medium's water retention and air permeability. Then spread a layer of growing medium on top and set it aside.
6. Water the old pot thoroughly, then insert a shovel along the edge of the pot down to the bottom, and rotate it once around the pot wall. After that, shake the old pot a little to make the growing medium inside looser.
7. Hold the bamboo body with your hands, and take it out together with the growing medium below it.
8. Check the removed bamboo and growing medium, and remove any rotten bamboo and any growing medium with obvious attachments.
9. Place the prepared bamboo into the new pot, then fill in some growing medium. At this time, note that you cannot fill too much; just let the soil height be level with the original soil height. Afterward, press the growing medium firm.
10. Place the new pot together with the bamboo in a cool place, and water it thoroughly. Note that at this time it must not be exposed directly to the sun.
Soil Cutting Propagation Method for Lucky Bamboo
1. Time for soil cuttings. The most suitable time for spring cuttings is from late January to mid-February, and they can be directly potted, generally rooting in 30~35 days. Or cuttings can be taken in mid-March or early April, because during this period the temperature gradually rises and humidity increases; after cutting, they can root in 7~15 days, and the survival rate is 100%, which is relatively shorter in time.
2. Soil cutting method. Every spring, cut 20~25 cm top branches (tender stems), soak them in potassium permanganate solution for 30 minutes, then dry them in a cool place. After drying, insert the branches into a pot; the soil should mainly be sandy loam, with 2 stem nodes buried in the soil. Water once a day, and after rooting in 34~45 days, resume normal care.
The cultivation techniques for Lucky Bamboo are actually quite simple once mastered; generally, you can start with aspects such as its light, temperature, and fertilizer and water. When growing Lucky Bamboo, be sure to remember that the placement location should not face an air conditioner. This may cause the Lucky Bamboo to die.
