Many people think that the air plant (Tillandsia) is a new variety of pineapple, but this is not the case. The air plant is a highly ornamental plant. Its appearance is quite similar to the leaves at the top of a pineapple. At present, many people like to grow it at home. However, during the cultivation process, you need to master certain techniques.

How to Grow Air Plants So They Grow Fast

1. The plant needs to be kept in an environment above 20°C, but the temperature should preferably not exceed 25°C. Growing air plants at such temperatures will make them grow relatively faster, and they may grow several centimeters taller over the whole growing period. In addition, you should keep the environment well ventilated, which helps the plant absorb more nutrients.

1. Place the plant in an environment with plenty of scattered light, and it will grow more rapidly. Do not place it in an environment with relatively strong light, otherwise the plant can easily enter a state of stagnant growth. However, air plants should not be placed in an overly dark environment either, otherwise the leaves can easily become pale.

3. To make air plants grow more luxuriantly, you can regularly soak them in water containing nutrient solution. Each soaking should not exceed two hours, and after soaking, hang the plant upside down in the air to prevent water from accumulating in the center of the leaves. You should also note that only one drop of nutrient solution should be added each time; if there is too much, the plant cannot absorb it and may even experience leaf burn.

Air Plant Cultivation Methods

1. Temperature requirements. Air plants can tolerate low temperatures of 0°C and high temperatures of 40°C. Most varieties will suffer frost damage below 5°C, and the plant will die below 0°C. The most suitable temperature for growth is 15-30°C. When the temperature is above 25°C, ventilation should be strengthened and air humidity increased. In summer, pay attention to spraying water to humidify and cool the plant.

2. Water spraying requirements. For the water spraying method for air plants, use a spray bottle to spray water 2-3 times a week. When the weather is relatively dry, you can spray once a day. When spraying, spray until the leaf surface is completely wet, but be careful not to let water accumulate in the center of the leaves. If too much water is sprayed, you can turn the plant upside down to let the excess water flow out.

3. Light requirements. Air plant varieties with grayer leaves, more white scales, and thicker, harder leaves need relatively strong light; while varieties with greener leaves, fewer scales, and softer leaves are more shade-tolerant. During care, you can provide appropriate light according to the variety. The simplest method is to place the plant in a bright spot indoors. If the growth is weak and spindly, just supplement light in time.

4. Fertilization requirements. The simplest method is to immerse the plant in a fertilizer solution diluted 3000-5000 times for 1-2 hours, then take it out, once a week. Stop fertilizing in winter.

Precautions for Air Plants

A reminder to everyone: never put air plants in a tank, because air plants need a large amount of air circulation, and they will rot in a stuffy tank. If the air is too dry, you can soak the plant in water for one hour, then shake off the water on the leaves. Note that when there is water on the leaves, never expose the plant to the sun. Usually, the winter temperature should be kept above 5°C. Generally, the indoor temperature at home in winter is around 20°C, which is just right, but when caring for the plant indoors, do not place it near an air conditioner vent or radiator, and do not let cold air blow directly on it.

Common Problems When Growing Air Plants

1. Air plant tip burn. When growing air plants, tip burn may sometimes occur due to insufficient water or excessively high temperatures. When this problem occurs, you can appropriately spray water every day, spray a little water, and then lower the temperature of the growing environment; the tip burn will then improve. The leaves that have already been damaged can be pruned off.

2. Air plant breakage. Breakage occurs when an air plant is bent to a large extent, causing the severely folded part of the leaf to discolor or even scorch, and the leaf veins to break. At this time, it will affect the ornamental value of the air plant, so you can cut it off.

When growing air plants, you must understand their growth habits. When growing them in summer, control the temperature well, as they can tolerate high temperatures. During the cultivation process, you need to strengthen the management of fertilizer and water. In the later stage, problems such as breakage and tip burn may occur, so everyone should have a way to deal with them. There is a detailed introduction above!
