Is the Spring Grass (Albuca) Poisonous? A Detailed Guide to Propagating Spring Grass
When reading posts online, I have seen many people who grow spring grass (Albuca) experience some unpleasant sensations after accidentally eating it, so I believe most people will have the same question as I do: does spring grass have a certain level of toxicity? So what is the truth?
Is spring grass poisonous?
Spring grass is somewhat toxic, and eating it produces a tingling and numbing sensation on the tongue, so it is best not to eat spring grass. Ordinary cultivation is no problem.
How to propagate spring grass
1. Division propagation
Gently snap off the small bulbs that sprout around the large bulb of the spring grass. Be careful to select small bulbs with good appearance and good growth for propagation.
Then simply plant them shallowly in the soil. When planting, leave about 1/3 of the bulb exposed above the soil surface. Whether they have roots or not, spring grass can survive.
When we carry out division propagation of spring grass, we can do it together with repotting in autumn.
2. Seed propagation
This method is suitable for mass propagation. If you want to propagate spring grass to give to relatives and friends, then seed propagation is a good choice.
When autumn arrives, gently bury the seeds of spring grass in the soil and cover with a piece of glass to keep the soil and air moist, which gives a relatively high germination rate.
After sowing and during the seedling stage, in order to avoid washing the seeds or young seedlings out of the soil when watering, use the “seep irrigation” method of watering: place the flowerpot in a basin of water so that water slowly seeps into the soil through the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot.
Varieties of spring grass
1. Spring grass
Spring grass is a plant in the genus Albuca in the family Hyacinthaceae, with round bulbs. The leaves are linear or strap-shaped and grow in a twisted, coiling manner. Some varieties of spring grass also have white hairs on the leaves and are called hairy-leaved spring grass. It produces flowers that are yellow, pale yellow on the front and yellow-green on the back, and some are also fragrant.
2. Broad-leaved spring grass
Broad-leaved spring grass is also called broad bullet or Yi grass. It is a plant in the genus Ornithogalum in the family Hyacinthaceae, with round spherical bulbs. The leaves of broad-leaved spring grass are long and strip-shaped, somewhat pointed at the tip, and grow in a twisted, upward direction. It also blooms, with white or pale yellow flowers. According to the degree of leaf curling, it also has types such as “curly” and “extra curly”. Generally, the higher the degree of leaf curling, the higher the ornamental value. In addition, the degree of curling of broad-leaved spring grass leaves is also closely related to the cultivation environment. In an environment with strong and sufficient sunlight, large temperature differences and dryness, the leaves curl the most.
3. Genus G spring grass
Genus G spring grass is mainly native to South Africa and is propagated by sowing.
Most leaves of Genus G spring grass are curled or coiled, and the upper part grows straight or prostrate. In midsummer it produces white or pink flowers with a sweet fragrance and can set seed.
4. Genus T spring grass
Plants of Genus T spring grass have thick fleshy roots, and the leaves vary in width, with some varieties also having hairs on the leaves.
The leaves of Genus T spring grass also curl in many ways; some fold and some twist. Kelp spring grass is this kind of plant. 5. Fire lily
Fire lily is also called Boophone. It is a plant in the genus Boophone in the family Amaryllidaceae. Fire lily is widely distributed in East Africa and southern Africa and has many types. In terms of leaf shape, there are variations such as broad leaves, curved leaves, wavy leaves and narrow leaves. It is commonly propagated by sowing. The leaves of fire lily are gray-green and grow at the top of the bulb in a fan-shaped arrangement, just like a peacock spreading its tail. The rose-red flowers are relatively small and numerous.
6. Curly-leaved cyrtanthus
Curly-leaved cyrtanthus is also always classified in the category of spring grass. It is a plant in the genus Cyrtanthus in the family Amaryllidaceae, and its flowers look somewhat like lilies. Its place of origin is South Africa.
There are actually not many varieties of curly-leaved cyrtanthus with curled leaves, only about 3——4 kinds, among which this species, curly-leaved cyrtanthus, has the highest degree of curling.
Growth habits of spring grass
Spring grass likes cool conditions and fears heat. Its growing period is from September each year to April of the following year. In winter the temperature should be kept at around 10°C to 20°C. In this environment the plant can continue to grow and normal fertilizer and water management can be carried out. If watering is controlled so that the plant goes dormant, it can safely overwinter indoors as long as the temperature is not below 0°C.
In mid-to-late May, as the temperature rises, the aboveground leaves gradually wither and the plant enters a dormant state. The dried leaves can be removed, and the bulb can be left in the original pot to spend the summer. The flowerpot should be placed in a dry, ventilated place with no standing water. Wait until the end of August or the beginning of September, as the weather turns cooler, new buds will grow from the bulb, and then normal management can gradually be resumed.
It is worth reminding that during summer dormancy, the plant should not be given no water for the entire summer. It can be kept slightly moist. Although the leaves have dried up, the underground bulb will still grow. Do not pour water on the dried center of the leaves. After a summer, the bulb will grow quite a bit larger.
Normal cultivation of spring grass generally does not cause any harm to the human body, so friends who like spring grass can cultivate it with confidence. However, accidental eating should be avoided. At the same time, the survival of spring grass requires everyone's careful care, so that spring grass can continue to be the goddess in everyone's hearts.
