Silver Queen (Aglaonema), a very imposing name, is an especially popular green plant with broad, beautiful leaves and lovely coloring. It has a certain ornamental value and also purifies the air. Many people like to grow Silver Queen at home, not only because it is beautiful and elegant, but also because it is a particularly easy foliage plant to grow. So how do you take cuttings from Silver Queen?

Silver Queen Cutting Propagation Methods

After an adult plant has been grown for some time, the lower leaves gradually wither, leaving the stem bare and unsightly. At this point you can choose to propagate to renew the plant. Cut off the top stem for cuttings, and the base left behind can still sprout new shoots.

Cuttings are usually taken in late spring and early summer. Cut the plant's stem and slice it into small sections, each with 2 nodes, and insert them into sterilized soil. Be careful to keep the buds facing upward, or insert them vertically; never insert them upside down, otherwise they will be very hard to root.

After cutting, provide appropriate shade and keep the soil moist. You can cover them with plastic film; on sunny days at noon, you can uncover the film, mist lightly, and cover it again. Spray a fungicide once every 7-10 days (a diluted solution of 0.1% carbendazim, thiophanate-methyl, or quintozene is fine). Roots usually form in 20-25 days, and when the roots reach 2cm you can pot them up.

Silver Queen Planting Methods

1. Best Growing Soil

Silver Queen is mostly grown in pots, so if you want to grow it well, choose good soil. For potting, loose peat soil or turf soil is best, or use a mix of leaf mold and sandy loam, and acidify the soil with a small amount of diluted ferrous sulfate.

2. Water and Fertilizer Requirements

Spring and autumn are the peak growing seasons for Silver Queen, so watering should be ample and the potting soil should stay consistently moist. The water temperature should not be too low; the same as room temperature is fine. Frequently spray the branches and leaves with clean water to prevent the leaf tips from drying out, but try not to let water accumulate.

During the growing period, apply a dilute liquid fertilizer once every half month, combining watering with fertilizing to ensure the fertilizer is neither too strong nor too weak. In winter, Silver Queen grows more slowly, so water less and stop fertilizing.

3. Best Growing Temperature

Silver Queen grows fastest at 20-24°C. Above 30°C it stops growing and the leaves tend to turn yellow with dry tips. So in summer care, pay attention to heat protection and cooling, ventilate frequently to lower the temperature, or sprinkle water on the ground. In winter, do not place Silver Queen near a window, to avoid temperatures that are too low and affect growth. In winter, just keep the temperature at 10°C, and do not let it drop below 5°C.

4. Best Growing Light

When growing outdoors in summer, pay attention to shading so the light is not too strong, otherwise sunscald easily occurs. When overwintering in a greenhouse or indoors in winter, pay attention to light exposure to prevent insufficient light from fading the leaf color.

Silver Queen Growth Characteristics

Silver Queen likes a warm, humid climate and is not cold-tolerant. Its suitable growing temperature is 16-21°C. Therefore, in summer you should protect it from heat and cool it down with good ventilation, and in winter it should be grown in a greenhouse or indoors, with 10°C being ideal for overwintering and never below 5°C. Silver Queen needs plenty of water during the growing period; in midsummer, spray water on the leaves morning and evening and place it in partial shade. In winter, stem and leaf growth slows, so water should be controlled and the potting soil kept slightly dry. In late spring and early summer, apply a little acidic nitrogen fertilizer; in summer, increase nitrogen fertilizer; in early and mid-autumn, apply some compound fertilizer; in late autumn and early winter, stop fertilizing. With sufficient fertilizer, the stems are thick and strong, there are many tillers, and the leaves are large.

Silver Queen Care Precautions

Do not let water accumulate in the Silver Queen pot (watering too frequently), as this easily causes root rot. It is best to water only after you see the potting soil has dried out. If the pot is fairly deep, the watering frequency should be reduced even more. In summer you can water or mist appropriately more often to maintain humidity. There is a saying, “whether it lives or dies depends on water”, which shows the importance of watering.

Silver Queen cannot stand being scorched by the sun. Silver Queen is mainly grown for its leaves; if it is kept in strong sunlight for a long time, especially at noon in summer, the leaves are easily sunburned, which affects its ornamental value and defeats the purpose of caring for it.

Through the above, I believe everyone has gained some understanding of Silver Queen. Silver Queen is very suitable for growing indoors; while decorating a room, it can also purify the air. If you like it, you can grow one or two pots at home!
