The morning glory is a fairly common herbaceous plant in everyday life. Its flowers are most commonly peach-red in color and shaped like a trumpet, giving it great ornamental value. In the past it was more commonly found growing wild, but now many people grow it. However, when growing it, you also need to master some techniques.

How to Grow Morning Glories

1. Prepare the materials. First of all, you need seeds and a flower pot with a diameter of 20 cm. If the pot is too small, the morning glory's roots cannot extend easily and the plant will not grow vigorously. However, if you want to improve the germination rate, it is best to use small seedling pots, one seed per pot, and replant after the seed germinates and grows leaves. Soil and the necessary gardening tools go without saying.

2. Soak the seeds. Because morning glory seeds have a hard outer shell, they do not germinate easily without soaking, so soak the seeds in water for one night.

3. Change the pot. Fill the prepared seedling soil into a small flower pot; here a seedling pot is used. While filling, press with your hand, crush the large clumps of soil, and throw the ones you cannot crush into the bottom of another pot beside it. Then water thoroughly and set it aside for later use.

4. Sow the seeds. Morning glory seeds are rather small, so when sowing you can use a tool such as tweezers or a spoon to place one seed on top, then press it slightly firm.

Morning Glory Planting Methods

1. First prepare fertile soil, then scatter the seeds on the soil and spray a little water so that the soil surface is moist. Next, just wait for the seeds to germinate and emerge from the soil.

2. Control the temperature well. To make the petunia seeds germinate smoothly, the temperature is best kept at 15-20 degrees. If the temperature is too low or too high, it is unfavorable for growth. For example, below 10 degrees, the seeds do not germinate easily, and if the temperature is too high, the young sprouts rot easily.

3. Change the pot at the right time. When the young sprouts grow into seedlings with 5-6 leaves, you can repot them; it is better to move them to a slightly larger pot, add some organic fertilizer to the soil, water appropriately, pay attention to ventilation, and wait quietly for new leaves to grow.

4. Watering taboos. The petunia's growing environment is one where it likes dryness and fears moisture. When watering petunia seedlings, do not give too much at one time, otherwise the roots rot easily. In short, it is better to keep them dry than waterlogged; only in this way can the plant be ensured to be lush.

5. Fertilize in time. During the petunia's growth process, if you find that the leaves have become rather yellow, it is mostly caused by a lack of fertilizer, so you can fertilize appropriately, applying 20-30 grams per pot. When fertilizing, you can dissolve the fertilizer into a liquid and spray it directly on the leaf surface.

6. Prune appropriately. When the petunia is growing, if you find that some leaves are large and some are small, then you must dare to prune, thereby controlling the overall shape.

Precautions for Morning Glories

1. Clean water quality. Do not use fertilized water or muddy water to irrigate the leaves, and when watering, try not to let soil get onto the leaves.

2. Pinch off flowers. Only when the vines grow vigorously will they bloom. The ideal situation is that the first leaf of the vine produces an axillary bud, and the second and third leaves produce flower buds. When the flower buds are differentiating, you can pinch off a portion of them, which is more favorable for blooming.

Methods for Preventing and Controlling Pests and Diseases of Morning Glories

1. Morning glory brown spot disease. When the morning glory is affected, round or polygonal disease spots appear on the leaves, with the center dark gray and the edges dark brown. The surface of the spots produces many light black mold layers. In severe cases, the spots do not cover the entire leaf, and the leaves wither.

Prevention and control methods: Plant at an appropriate density, avoid excessive watering, and promptly remove diseased leaves when found; in the early stage of the disease, promptly spray Guoguang Bixian, once every 7~10 days, and spraying continuously 2~3 times is enough.

2. Morning glory damping-off disease. The morning glory naturally grows prostrate, but it can also suffer from lodging disease. When affected, the whole plant droops and lies on the ground, and the leaves gradually turn yellow and rot.

Prevention and control methods: Once the disease occurs, promptly pull out the diseased plants, use agents such as Previcur, Yishuangling, and Genbingzhi to irrigate the soil, and you can also use chlorothalonil or thiophanate-methyl at 800—1000 times dilution for prevention and control.

3. Morning glory pests. When morning glories are grown at home, there are relatively few pests, unless your home is especially messy; generally pests rarely appear. Common morning glory pests include: aphids, leaf roller moths, red spider mites, and cabbage caterpillars.

Prevention and control methods: Pay attention and observe during care, and when you find insects, just spray the relevant agents.

When planting morning glories, you must do the preliminary work well, including the selection of soil, pots, seeds, and so on. Then choose a time for sowing. After sowing, you need to manage the morning glories, including management of fertilizer and water and pests. Only by doing these well can you ensure their growth.
