A Detailed Guide to Growing Lobelia: Methods and Precautions
Lobelia is very common in everyday life; you can generally see it growing along roadsides. Because of its high ornamental value, many people now grow it specifically for sale. However, before planting, many people surely want to gain a deeper understanding of its growing techniques, so that it can grow well.
How to grow lobelia
1. Evenly scatter the seeds on the surface of the potting soil; no covering material is needed on top, and no watering is needed either, but the soil should be slightly moist before sowing. Then keep the temperature below 22 degrees, and after about 20 days small sprouts will emerge.
2. If the temperature is relatively low, you can wrap it completely with plastic film, and when the daytime temperature is higher, open it to let in some air.
3. When the small sprouts have grown to about 4 cm, you can thin them out or transplant them, selecting the weaker-growing and smaller seedlings to pull out; at the same time, also clear out the weeds together.
4. At this point, keep the temperature between 15 degrees and 18 degrees. After planting out, water about once every 7 to 10 days, and during the growing period you can fertilize once every 7 days.
5. If you want it to bloom profusely with vivid colors and large, full flowers, then the temperature must be kept within 15 degrees.
Lobelia growing methods
1. Potting soil: For lobelia, choose a loose, well-draining sandy soil rich in humus. Put the soil into a flower pot about 10 cm to 15 cm in diameter, and add some base fertilizer. You can plant 2 to 3 small seedlings in the pot, so that the potted lobelia looks fuller and more vigorous when it blooms.
2. Light: Lobelia is a long-day plant and needs to be guaranteed a relatively long period of light. It needs to receive long hours of sunlight every day. In winter and early spring, when daylight hours are shorter, you need to provide supplemental artificial light for lobelia to meet the light conditions for flowering.
3. Temperature: Lobelia grows well only in a low-temperature environment. The suitable growing temperature is between 15°C and 18°C. It has poor cold tolerance and is also not tolerant of extreme heat. In winter, when the weather is cold, it does not have to be brought indoors to overwinter, but note that lobelia is not tolerant of frost and must be protected from freezing.
4. Water and fertilizer: During the growing period, lobelia can be watered once every 7 to 10 days, basically following the principle of watering thoroughly only after the soil has dried out. When fertilizing, it should be done according to the growth needs of lobelia. During the growing period, to help lobelia grow healthily, you can apply a nitrogen fertilizer once a week.
Precautions for growing lobelia
1. Pinching and pruning. Pinching and pruning is a simple way to control the plant shape of lobelia. Pinching during the growing period promotes the growth of lobelia's side buds; with more branches, there will also be more flower buds.
2. Pests and diseases. During the growing period of lobelia, you need to frequently observe the growth condition of the lobelia plants. Use some fungicidal and insecticidal agents to prevent damage from mold or red spider mites, so that lobelia grows healthily.
How to propagate lobelia by cuttings
Cutting method: Propagating lobelia by cuttings is a skilled task, because lobelia's flowering stems are very thin and small. Generally, just cut off a spike of about two cm, then insert the flower spike into a prepared plastic bag or box. Actually, when taking cuttings, you must find the right spot to insert the cutting so as to increase the survival rate. After cutting, try to let the lobelia seedlings come into contact with plenty of warm sunlight, and let lobelia grow in a clean and airy environment.
Before planting lobelia, you must do a good job of choosing the site. It likes to grow in soil containing humus, so the soil ratio must be prepared well. Then choose an appropriate time for planting. After planting, strengthen the management of water and fertilizer, and timely pinching and pest control are also essential.
