Watering Tips and Propagation Methods for Forget-Me-Not Flowers
Watering is a highly technical matter; it looks simple, yet it bears on the normal growth of plants. So during the planting process we need to maintain a very cautious attitude toward watering. Propagation is the fundamental reason plants have continued to this day without end, and forget-me-nots naturally cannot escape such rules either.
How to Water Forget-Me-Not Flowers
1. The amount of water
The forget-me-nots everyone usually sees are cut flowers, which look rather dry, so we generally assume that the environment where they grow must also be especially dry. Actually this is a wrong idea. Forget-me-nots still like water, but they are especially afraid of too much water, so when caring for them we must keep their soil slightly moist, but there should be no standing water at the root area. When the sunlight is fairly abundant, we can appropriately give them a little more water, which can increase the humidity of the surrounding air.
If it is not their growing season, then we can simply let the soil in the pot be slightly moist and on the dry side; only this way can they grow better.
2. The time to water
Generally in spring and autumn we can water in the morning and afternoon, both are fine, because the temperature at this time is also fairly suitable.
But when summer arrives, the temperature will be relatively high, and at this time if we need to water them we must pay attention to one point: we usually choose to water in the morning and evening, when the temperature is not so high, which is very suitable.
When winter comes, the temperature becomes very low again, and at this time we should water as much as possible at noon when the temperature is a bit higher; only this way can they grow better.
3. The method of watering
There are also ways and methods when watering. Generally we should water slowly and evenly; we can slowly pour the water into the soil, and must not use too much force, otherwise it is bad for the surface layer of the soil.
When watering, we generally go around the edge of the flower pot in a circle, so that every inch of soil can be evenly watered, allowing its roots to absorb it better and satisfying its demand for moisture. So the technique of watering is also necessary.
Propagation Methods for Forget-Me-Nots
1. The sowing method for forget-me-nots
Sowing can generally be done from September to January, but forget-me-not seeds are light-shy, so after sowing the seeds you should cover them with a little soil and maintain humidity.
At room temperature of 15°C, sow the seeds, and try to scatter them as evenly as possible, not all clustered together, otherwise germination will be affected. After sowing, water, shade, and keep moist; they sprout in 10~15 days. After sowing, be careful not to let the temperature exceed 25°C. After sprouting, they need frequent ventilation, and when the seedlings grow to more than 5 leaves they can be planted out.
2. The planting-out method for forget-me-nots
Forget-me-nots like dryness and prefer deep soil, loose and airy, slightly alkaline sandy loam, such as decomposed organic fertilizer and slow-release compound fertilizer; after applying, evenly turn it into the soil. After planting out, the distance between plants should be 30~40 cm, and the planting depth should be such that the substrate is slightly higher than the root crown. After planting, there should be 2 months of maintaining a temperature below 15°C, to help the plants pass through the vernalization stage, which is beneficial for normal growth and flowering. 3. Staking with netting for forget-me-nots
If not controlled, forget-me-nots will grow very fast. To ensure forget-me-nots grow luxuriantly but not messily, you need to stake the flower stems with netting. The specific method is: before the plants bolt, use 25 cm × 25 cm or 30 cm × 30 cm nylon netting, and set up a layer of netting frame 20~30 cm from the ground. For small potted plants, just build a support.
