Globe amaranth is a plant with very strong vitality. Its stems are tall and straight, and at the top of each stem is a rather brightly colored flower. What sets it apart from ordinary plants is its flowers: the blooms remain unfading for a long time, so its ornamental value is very high, and it is deeply loved by people, who grow it.

Globe Amaranth Propagation Methods

1. Propagation by sowing. Every year in spring and summer, roughly in April and May, the climate is most suitable for propagating globe amaranth. Scatter an appropriate amount of globe amaranth seeds evenly in a relatively large soil area; gardeners with the right conditions can simply open up a patch of bare ground in the yard and sow there. You are surely already well practiced in the basic techniques of loosening the soil and sowing seeds, so we will not go into further detail here. Remember to disinfect and treat the seeds before putting them into the soil, which can effectively increase the germination rate; then, once they have grown to a certain height by June, they can be transplanted.

2. Propagation by cuttings. Summer is the season when globe amaranth grows most vigorously, and it is also the most suitable season for taking cuttings. Cut some relatively robust branches from the plant to a length of about 5 cm, remove the leaves from the portion of the branch that will be inserted into the soil, and then insert the branch directly into the soil. A temperature environment averaging around 20-plus degrees is most favorable for the sprouting and growth of the root system. In about three weeks the roots will have grown long enough to transplant it into a flowerpot, and thus a new globe amaranth is born.

How to Sow Globe Amaranth

1. Soaking globe amaranth seeds. Find a relatively shallow container, place the seeds in it, pour in water, just enough to cover the seeds. Soak in cold water for 2 days or in warm water for one day. The purpose of soaking the seeds is to soften the seed coat and increase the germination rate.

2. Globe amaranth seed germination. After the seeds have been soaked, wrap them well in cheesecloth and place them in a shallow basin, or you can also use a paper towel. Sprinkle with clean water 1~2 times a day and place them in a warm spot with scattered light. After two weeks you will see small white sprouts, and at this point you can sow them.

3. Globe amaranth sowing method. After germination, sow them in a pot, cover with a shallow layer of soil, then cover with glass to keep them warm and moist. Once all the seedlings have emerged, pull out the thin, weak ones. Globe amaranth seedlings grow slowly, and growth accelerates after June; when the seedlings have grown 7~8 leaves, move them to other flowerpots or containers.

4. Globe amaranth sowing. During the subsequent care and growth period, do not water or fertilize too much, otherwise it will cause excessive growth of stems and leaves and sparse flowering. When it is relatively hot in summer, pay attention to replenishing water; you can keep the flowerpot outdoors, but be careful to shield it from rain.

Field Management of Globe Amaranth

1. Shaping. When the seedlings are 15 cm tall, pinch off the growing tips once to encourage branching. After that, decide based on the growth situation whether to pinch the tips a second time. When shaping and pruning, pay attention to rounding out the plant's shape so that the globe amaranth has higher ornamental value. Once the plant has taken shape, pinching the tips of the branches can effectively control the flowering period.

2. Watering. Globe amaranth likes a slightly moist, on the dry side soil environment and is relatively drought tolerant. Therefore, after the seedlings have grown new leaves again, watering should be appropriately controlled; after the plant has differentiated flower buds, appropriately increase the amount of watering to facilitate normal flower growth.

3. Fertilizing. In addition to using decomposed chicken manure as a base fertilizer at planting time, during the vigorous growth stage you should also apply a diluted liquid fertilizer rich in phosphorus and potassium once every half month.

Disease Control of Globe Amaranth

1. Leaf spot disease. Control method: promptly remove leaves with spots to avoid infecting others. Apply more phosphorus and potassium fertilizer and control the amount of nitrogen fertilizer to strengthen the plant's disease resistance. Spray medicine promptly at the early stage of the disease to control the condition; you can ask at a flower shop about which sprays to use, and the commonly used Huhuashen and carbendazim are both fine. Apply once every 15 days, spraying 2~3 times in succession.

2. Damping-off. Control method: In the early stage, when the plant has collapsed but not severely and is only slightly lodging, promptly spray a thiophanate-methyl solution, which can alleviate it to a certain extent. If the plant's stem has already collapsed and begun to rot, pull the plant out promptly; it cannot be saved. After pulling it out, spray a sterilizing agent to avoid infecting other plants.

3. Viral disease. Control method: prevent and control pests and diseases, and once insects are found, remove them promptly. Reduce wounds on the plant and avoid causing artificial wounds on the leaves during care, because although we say our care environment is clean, it is in fact full of bacteria; avoid viruses invading through wounds.

The propagation methods for globe amaranth are similar to those for ordinary flowering plants, with sowing and cutting propagation being the more common ones. When planting, you must do a good job of selecting seeds and choose an appropriate time to proceed. In the later stages of planting, field management must be carried out; only in this way can globe amaranth grow better.
