A Detailed Guide to Thyme Planting Methods and Precautions
In China, thyme is commonly known as dijiao, dihuajiao, shanjiao, shanhujiao, shexiangcao, and so on, and is mainly produced in the northwest region. Its fragrance lives up to its name, fragrant for a hundred li, rich but not overpowering. Of course, besides its captivating fragrance, thyme also carries a romantic and beautiful meaning——“good fortune and auspiciousness”, and its planting methods are also varied and simple to carry out.
How to Plant Thyme
The main planting methods for thyme are seed propagation, cutting propagation, and division propagation.
1. Seed propagation
Sow seeds and raise seedlings in spring from March to April. Because thyme seeds are very small, the seedling bed must be finely prepared, the soil must be fine, crumbly, and level, then lightly pressed down, watered, and broadcast sown, then covered with a thin layer of fine soil, and a small arch shed covered with plastic film should be set up to keep warm and retain moisture. Seedlings emerge after 10-12 days, and the film should be removed when the temperature is suitable. During the seedling stage, care should be taken to keep the soil moist and to remove weeds. When the seedlings are 10-15 cm tall, they can be directly transplanted into the field at row and plant spacings of (30-45) cm × (25-30) cm, and watered after planting.
2. Cutting propagation
Using the cutting method, roots form very easily and propagation is very easy. For large-scale production, in order to achieve consistent quality, cuttings of 3-5 nodes, about 5 cm long, with terminal buds are taken for rooting. Although cuttings without terminal buds or already lignified branches can survive, they root slowly and have fewer roots. When cutting, they should be inserted into paper tube seedling trays with a diameter of 2 cm, which makes transplanting after survival convenient. The layering and division methods cause branches to contact the ground and automatically grow roots, and when directly cut off they become an independent plant, making them more suitable for home gardeners.
3. Division propagation
Select plants more than 3 years old, and in late March or early April before they sprout, dig out the mother plant with its roots, then according to the size of the clump, divide it into 4-6 parts. Each clump should be guaranteed to have 4-5 buds, and can then be planted. In addition, there is also the cluster division propagation method. During the growing period, cut off the creeping stems and transplant them.
Thyme Planting Methods and Precautions
1. In terms of growth habits, thyme prefers warmth, light, and a dry environment, and has low requirements for soil, but grows well in well-drained calcareous soil. Loose and well-drained land, in a sunny place. It grows on rocky mountain areas, slopes, valleys, ravines, roadsides, and among weeds, at an altitude of 1100-3600 m.
2. In terms of growing medium, thyme has low requirements for soil quality, but its thick, somewhat fleshy leaves make it intolerant of moisture and in need of well-drained medium. Therefore, if peat soil is used as the growing material, about 20% of easily draining medium components should be added.
3. In terms of watering, it is better to let it dry slightly before watering than to keep it constantly moist, otherwise the roots cannot extend and function well. It should be watered immediately after planting, and care should be taken to keep the soil moist until the seedlings recover. During the growing period, water once a month, and loosen the soil by cultivating in time. During the rainy season, attention should be paid to drainage. If the medium is always wet, aeration will also be poor. Thyme grows slowly and does not need much fertilizer. If peat is used as the medium, adding about 5%-10% decomposed organic fertilizer is sufficient. After the plant grows larger, cut branches for use.
4. In terms of fertilizing, when new buds begin to grow, apply liquid fertilizer diluted 1000 times as appropriate every 10-15 days. In summer, plant growth weakens, and fertilizing at this time can easily cause root rot and death of the plant, so fertilizing should be stopped in summer and the plant should be placed in a cool place to pass the summer. At the same time as watering, topdress with urea 1-2 times according to growth conditions, with about 5 kg per mu each time. Before winter, after watering for overwintering, cultivate decomposed dry manure and earth up the soil to help it overwinter.
Ecological Value of Thyme
1. Thyme plants are relatively low and have creeping stems that grow along the ground surface, extending nearly horizontally. Adventitious buds on the stems can sprout many roots, forming a very strong root network that effectively prevents soil erosion.
2. Because thyme has outstanding cold resistance, drought resistance, tolerance of poor soil, disease and pest resistance, as well as rapid growth, a large number of flowers, a long flowering period, and a pleasant fragrance, it has become a rare and excellent ground cover plant in urban landscaping, and because of its strong stress resistance, broad ecological diversity, and clonal growth characteristics, it can form natural dominant plant species or single-species communities in many fragile habitats with severe soil degradation, playing an important ecological function in desertification community composition and ecological succession.
Medicinal Value of Thyme
Improves the digestive system and gynecological diseases, promotes blood circulation, enhances immunity, reduces neuralgic pain, and is antibacterial. Helps wound healing, treats eczema and acne-prone skin. Activates brain cells, improves memory and attention, counters depression, and soothes emotional trauma. It is very effective against dandruff and for inhibiting hair loss. Antibacterial, antispasmodic, against insect venom, sterilizing, strengthening the body, and promoting scarring. Strengthens nerves and prevents nightmares.
The leaves can be combined with various meat, fish, and shellfish dishes. Brewed as tea, it can help digestion, relieve flatulence, and sober one up. Adding honey to the infusion can treat whooping cough, colds, and sore throat. Bathing in it also has a soothing and nerve-calming effect. The extracted essential oil has a sterilizing effect and can be added to freckle creams, helping to remove freckles and improve aging skin. It can also be used as a material for making soap and mouthwash.
Among the many herbs, parsley is generally considered able to ease pain and promote digestion, symbolizing recovery and wholeness; sage has represented strength since ancient times; rosemary is a gift lovers use to express admiration, symbolizing loyalty, love, and eternal memory; and the pattern of thyme was embroidered on the shoulders of knights, representing courage. Plant a thyme, and let our courage bloom as well.
