Can Lucky Bamboo Be Grown in Water? Home Hydroponic Methods and Precautions
Lucky bamboo has a short, compact shape and strong adaptability. It can be grown not only in soil but also in water, and each method gives it its own distinctive look. Although its name contains the word "flower," it is a plant that does not bloom, and it is generally grown for its leaves. Below is an introduction to its hydroponic methods and precautions.
Can Lucky Bamboo Be Grown in Water?
It is native to the western islands of the Indian Ocean and the tropical regions of Asia and Africa. It was introduced to mainland China in the early 1980s and began to be planted in large quantities in the early 1990s. It has now become a major cash crop in the coastal areas of southern China. It can be grown in water.

Cultivation methods
1. Before placing it in water, cut off the leaves at the base of the cuttings, and cut the base with a sharp knife at a slanted angle. The cut should be smooth to help it absorb water and nutrients. Change the clean water once every 3 days-4 days. Do not move its position or change its direction within 10 days. After about 15 days, silvery-white fibrous roots can grow.
2. After rooting, it should not be frequently changed; add water in time only after the water evaporates and decreases. Frequent water changes easily cause yellow leaves and wilting branches.
3. After rooting, apply a small amount of compound fertilizer in time, and the leaves will be glossy green and the stems thick and strong. If no fertilizer is applied for a long time, the plant will grow weak and the leaf color will easily turn yellow. However, too much fertilizer should not be applied, so as to avoid "burning the roots" or causing excessive leggy growth. In spring and autumn, apply compound fertilizer once a month.
Precautions
1. Temperature control
It is necessary to manage the indoor water-culture temperature for lucky bamboo well, because lucky bamboo prefers warmth, with 16°C to 25°C being suitable. It is not suitable to place it in a cold place for cultivation, and freeze protection measures should be taken.
2. Light and ventilation management
Lucky bamboo should have enough lighting time. Even when grown indoors, it should be exposed to sunlight moderately. Just place it in a ventilated place with sufficient light.
3. Lucky bamboo should be fertilized
When some flower enthusiasts went to buy lucky bamboo, the seller said it only needed to be grown in clean water, so they did not fertilize it, and later the leaves turned yellow. In fact, lucky bamboo grown in water also needs fertilizer. It depends on the actual situation. On average, fertilizer can be applied once about every 30 days. Moderate fertilization can keep its leaves glossy green and spreading for a long time, or an appropriate amount of culture solution can also be added.
Does Lucky Bamboo Bloom?
Lucky bamboo is a species under the genus Dracaena in the family Liliaceae. Lucky bamboo is suitable for water culture, potting, and hydroponics. It has extremely high ornamental value and is one of the few greenery and decorative items that can be placed indoors for a long time. It is a plant that does not bloom.
What to Do If Lucky Bamboo Leaves Turn Yellow
1. Scorch yellowing: Strong direct sunlight shining on lucky bamboo can easily cause the leaf tips and leaf margins to wither, and yellow spots appear on the sun-facing part of the leaves. Moving it to a shaded place is enough.
2. Light-deficiency yellowing: Being placed in a shady environment for a long time means the leaves cannot get enough sunlight and cannot form chlorophyll. The leaves of the whole plant turn yellow and then fall off. Supplementing light can prevent this problem.
3. Fertilizer yellowing: Yellowing of lucky bamboo caused by too much fertilizer or too high concentration shows as dry brown tips on new leaves. Generally, the leaf surface is thick and lacks luster, and is uneven and not spreading, while old leaves scorch yellow and fall off. Fertilization should be stopped immediately, and in severe cases, a large amount of clean water should be used to rinse out part of the fertilizer.
4. Nutrient-deficiency yellowing: This shows as the color of young leaves becoming lighter, appearing yellow or pale green, while old leaves remain relatively normal or gradually turn from green to yellow. Usually apply thin fertilizer frequently and add some alum water at the right time. (Lucky bamboo is a foliage plant, so fertilizer mainly based on nitrogen fertilizer should be applied.)
Although lucky bamboo has strong vitality and adaptability, problems can easily occur if it is not cared for properly. Yellow leaves are one of its common problems. It is divided into scorch yellowing, light-deficiency yellowing, fertilizer yellowing, and nutrient-deficiency yellowing. We should observe carefully to see which cause it belongs to and treat it accordingly, so that it can grow well.
