As the weather gradually warms up, all kinds of flowers and plants begin to compete in beauty, and roses also begin to show their branches and buds. The rose is an ornamental flower that is relatively easy to keep alive, and generally does not need much care to produce beautiful blooms. But many people are not very familiar with how it reproduces. Below, the editor will introduce its grafting and cutting propagation methods.

Rose grafting methods

1. Grafting time

Roses can be grafted at any time of the year, but the specific situation must be analyzed specifically. When the temperature reaches above 33°C, the survival rate of grafting is relatively reduced, and below 5°C the grafted plant is in a dormant state, so grafting during the winter dormant period is suitable.

2. Grafting steps

1. First select the rootstock. The rootstock should have many roots and stems so it is easy to survive. If a tumor grows on the roots and stems, the part with the tumor should be cut off entirely. Then at the joint, use a small knife to make a slanted cut of about 1.5 cm. Be careful not to cut it off.

2. Then deal with the scion. Choose the scion variety you want to graft well, and cut off all the thorns on the scion. If you are not in a hurry to graft, you can first put the treated scion in water, but it can only be kept for 2 days. Then make a slanted cut on the part to be grafted, like the bottom of a straw.

3. Join the two cut surfaces together and wrap them well with grafting tape. Do not wrap too much or too loosely.

4. Move the grafted plant into the soil. The soil should always be kept moist. Place the flower pot in a warm, sunny place.

When is the best time to take rose cuttings

1. Softwood cuttings

Carry this out in April-May and September-October, the seasons when it grows best. At a temperature of 2-5°C, it is easiest to take root and survive. Keep the soil moist, but not too wet, so as to allow the soil to have enough air and prevent the wound from rotting. After about half a month, gradually increase the time of sunlight exposure to increase photosynthesis and help rooting. When new buds grow out and the old leaves do not fall off, it means the cuttings have rooted and survived, and they can be transplanted.

2. Hardwood cuttings

The soil and soil preparation are the same as for softwood cuttings. Cutting can be carried out from when the rose sheds its leaves and enters dormancy until before it sprouts the following spring.

3. Bud cuttings

Because new buds in spring have strong growth power, using them as cutting material gives a high survival rate.

4. Full-sun cuttings

Full-sun cuttings means that during the entire cutting process, no shading is used, so that they receive sufficient sunlight. But because the cuttings have no root system and cannot absorb water normally, in order for the cuttings to carry out normal photosynthesis and life activities, water must be supplemented through the leaf surface, and the leaves should be sprayed with water frequently.

If there is no spraying device, frequent spraying can be used instead. In the first week after cutting, spray water once every half hour; after one week, spray water every 2 hours. Therefore, the seedbed for full-sun cuttings should mainly be plain sand. After 3 weeks, they can be transplanted.

When to prune roses

1. Pruning time

Generally, pruning should be carried out once every year in December, when the rose leaves fall. This is heavy pruning, keeping only 15 cm of the plant, and at the same time cutting off diseased branches and so on from the plant.

Next is pruning after flowering. Generally, after the first flowering, pruning can be carried out in May. After the second flowering, prune in June-July. After the third flowering, prune in August. When flower buds grow out, the buds also need to be removed in good time, so that flowering has sufficient nutrients and can bloom in batches.

2. Pruning precautions

1. Pruning roses in winter is very important. Note that the pruning time cannot be too early; if it is too early, the branches are very likely to sprout.

2. When pruning, note that the degree of pruning depends on what kind of tree shape you need. Different plants have different requirements and different pruning methods. Light pruning or heavy pruning both depend on the needs of the plant.

How to grow roses in water

1. Hydroponic method

After the rose flowers fade, cut off the remaining flowers and let the flowering branch grow for several days. Wait until the first axillary bud on the flowering branch grows thicker and stronger and accumulates nutrients, then cut off a cutting with 3 nodes, remove the leaf stalk at the bottom layer, use a sharp blade to cut the back side of the bottom bud into a slanted surface, and immediately insert it into a prepared bottle full of clean water. The cutting can be inserted 1/3 to 1/2 into the water.

To reduce water evaporation from the leaves, some leaves can be cut off. In a dark environment, the cut is likely to grow new roots, so a brown bottle should be used. If there is no brown one, a layer of black plastic film can be wrapped around the outside of the bottle. Place the bottle in a south-facing windowsill, but do not expose it directly to the sun.

2. Hydroponic care

When the temperature is relatively high, change the water once a week. At a temperature of 15-25°C, roots only need about 20 days to grow. When the young roots grow to 1-2 cm long, they can be transplanted into a pot. Because the young roots grow in water, in order to help them adapt to the environment, water once a day at the beginning of transplanting, then gradually reduce it. After one week of shading, they can receive sunlight in the morning and evening, and they will survive.

What many flower-growing friends look forward to most is seeing the flowers and plants they grow produce beautiful blooms. This not only contributes to beautifying the home environment, but also makes us very happy. Mastering the key points of growing roses is very important; with proper care, they can bloom all year round.
