The torch lily is native to Africa and was introduced to China from there as a flower variety; it is now widely cultivated and grown in China. The torch lily has very high ornamental value, which attracts many people to buy and grow it. However, if many people use improper methods when growing it, some problems will arise, so mastering the cultivation methods is an important step.

How to Grow Torch Lilies

1. Torch lilies like a semi-shaded living environment. Spring and autumn are their growing seasons, and at this time they should be watered appropriately to keep the soil moist. During the growing season, additional fertilizer should also be applied to ensure the nutritional supply for the torch lily during its growth period, so it can grow larger leaves and flowers.

2. Generally, when torch lilies are grown at home, they are placed indoors, which can keep their growing environment cool; do not place them outdoors in direct sun. When the climate is dry, water the torch lily promptly. During the usual growing season of the torch lily, also pay attention to increasing fertilizer application. If they are potted plants, pay attention to pruning the shape of the torch lily and removing weeds in the pot to keep the potted plant looking attractive.

Torch Lily Cultivation Methods

1. Soil: Torch lilies are mostly grown in open ground, but they can also be potted. The planting site should be chosen in a high, dry, wind-sheltered, sunny spot. Before planting, the soil should be deeply plowed and some decomposed organic fertilizer should be mixed in. For potting, deep, fertile, well-drained sandy loam soil is required.

2. Sunlight: Catharanthus roseus likes a warm, sunny environment. If a potted plant is kept in a shaded place for a long time, insufficient light will cause its leaves to turn yellow.

3. Temperature: Torch lilies can tolerate cold and can overwinter in winter at temperatures above 5 degrees C.

4. Watering: During the growing season, sufficient water and fertilizer should be provided, and then growth will be rapid. Divide plants in autumn; before replanting, apply more base fertilizer to supplement the nutrients in the plant. In arid winter and spring areas, before the ground freezes, water thoroughly and cover the plants roughly with dry grass or fallen leaves to prevent death from drying or freezing.

5. Fertilizing: When flower stems appear, apply 2-3 foliar topdressings of monopotassium phosphate at a concentration of 0.1%, with an interval of 7-10 days each time; or apply 1%-2% superphosphate once as a soil topdressing, which can increase the firmness of the flower stems and prevent bending.

6. Pruning: After flowering, the spent flower stems should be cut off as early as possible so they do not set seed, to avoid consuming nutrients.

Precautions for Torch Lilies

1. In order for torch lilies to grow well and bloom profusely with bright colors, sufficient fully decomposed organic fertilizer and a certain amount of superphosphate or bone meal should be applied before planting.

2. In order to maintain the excellent characteristics of the torch lily, division propagation is better. Division propagation is suitable in autumn; after digging out the perennial roots, find the shortened rhizome from the root mass of the old roots, then cut it apart with the fibrous roots attached, and it can be planted.

Causes and Prevention of Yellowing Leaves in Torch Lilies

1. Caused by insufficient light. Insufficient light will cause the leaves of torch lilies to turn yellow. This is because torch lilies actually prefer an environment with sufficient light. When growing them, they need to be kept in sufficient light; do not leave them in a hidden place for a long time, as this will cause their leaves to turn yellow. Therefore, when growing torch lilies, their light requirements must be met; they can be shaded, but not excessively.

2. Caused by poor air permeability of the potting soil. When growing torch lilies, if the potting soil used has poor air permeability, or if the soil is sticky and somewhat alkaline, it is easy for the soil to become compacted, causing poor root growth. If the roots do not grow well, the plant will naturally be prone to problems, and yellowing leaves will appear. Therefore, when growing torch lilies, be sure to choose loose, breathable soil, pay attention to good drainage, and do not use clayey soil.

The cultivation method for torch lilies is actually not difficult; we can first understand their growth habits before carrying out care. In summer, torch lilies should not be exposed to sunlight for too long and need to be shaded. The amount of watering and fertilizing also needs attention; only by doing these well can their growth be ensured.
