“What a beautiful jasmine flower, fragrant and lovely, filling every branch……” This classic melody sung by people around the world still lingers in our ears. Jasmine is a fairly common flowering plant; not only are its flowers pure white, but they also give off an intoxicating fresh fragrance, and many people choose to grow a pot at home. However, when growing jasmine, besides paying attention to daily water and fertilizer management, choosing the right potting soil is also very important.

What soil is best for growing jasmine

Because jasmine in its place of origin grows in loose soil rich in humus, with a slightly acidic soil quality, the soil for large-scale open-field cultivation of jasmine must never be sticky and heavy or poorly drained. Sandy loam with strong water-holding capacity and rich in humus should be chosen. A location facing south or southeast with plenty of sunlight is best, and it can be planted on either hilly or flat land.

The soil for potted jasmine must be artificially mixed. An ideally mixed potting soil should have sufficient nutrient content, complete fertilizer components, and good drainage, and after watering the surface soil should not form a crust, and when dry it should not crack. The soil should be loose and rich in humus, giving the soil good water retention and fertilizer retention.

The specific formula for the growing soil is: choose 2 parts leaf mold, 2 parts peat soil, 4 parts sandy loam, 2 parts river sand, then add an appropriate amount of fully decomposed soybean cake or sesame oil residue powder, stir thoroughly, and it is ready to be put into pots for use. The amount of powdered fertilizer added should at most not exceed 5% of the volume of the growing soil in the pot. Excess easily causes root burn, making the branches and leaves turn yellow and the whole plant grow poorly.

What to do after jasmine flowers bloom

1. Pruning

In June it will produce its early flowers; at this time we can pick off its flowers, and at the same time remember to cut off the new leaves connected to the flowers, so that its new branches will grow better. After the third flowering, we should remove all those withered flowers, and also remove those faded branches, so that new flowering branches will grow out.

2. Fertilizer

In early June, we give it dilute fertilizer water twice a week. During June and July, we need to frequently apply thin fertilizer, generally once every two days; the fertilizer needs to be organic and decomposed, and water should make up 80 percent of the fertilizer water. In addition, we should carry out this operation in the evening.

In August, fertilizer of slightly higher concentration is needed, generally with water making up half of the fertilizer water, so that the flowers will be larger and more numerous. At the end of August, less fertilizer is needed, applied only once every six or seven days, and by September and October it is no longer needed.

3. Watering

In early June, keep its potting soil moist; between June and July it needs watering once a day, and at the end of August once every two days. In the days afterward, watering should gradually decrease, and by October it is enough to keep the soil only slightly moist.

4. Chemical substances

In early August, to promote better flowering, we can spray some calcium phosphate solution on the leaves. At each bud stage we can apply some Zhuangdiling, so that the flowers grown will look better, with purer color, and in addition the flowering time will be longer.

How to grow jasmine so it blooms more

1. Light

The environment it loves is hot and ventilated, which means we must give it sufficient light. Generally, when there is more light, its branches will be stronger, and the leaves will also be greener, and most importantly its flowers will be numerous and very fragrant, while few flowers is very likely due to too little sunlight.

2. Water

It cannot lack water, nor can it suffer from waterlogging. If there is a lot of rain, we should also pour the water off. In hot weather, water more in the morning and evening, so that it will grow many flowers.

3. Soil

If the soil we provide does not meet the requirements, it easily leads to few and small flowers. So it is best to give it slightly acidic flower soil with relatively high fertility, so that its roots grow more and its growth rate is also very fast.

4. Fertilizing

In midsummer, give it more fertilizer, because at this stage it grows especially fast, and we need to note that we must not apply too much nitrogen fertilizer while neglecting potassium and phosphorus, because the former will make the branches and leaves grow in vain with not even a single flower bud appearing, while the latter can promote flower formation.

5. Pruning

Pruning is also very important; generally we need to cut off the newly grown, outstandingly vigorous branches, so that its flowers will bloom more, and this operation can at the same time keep its shape compact. After the flowers fade, cut off the withered ones, so that new ones can grow.

6. Flowering period

When it is flowering, we must not splash water on the flowers, because this is very likely to cause the flowers to fall and also make the fragrance dissipate.

How to water jasmine

1. Spring

Spring is the season for growth. At this time jasmine can be moved outdoors for growing, and jasmine will also begin a new round of growth. At this time its water supply must be ensured, with watering once a day, preferably in the afternoon.

2. Summer

In summer, because the temperature is relatively high and the sunlight relatively strong, its water evaporation is also large, so watering must be increased, with watering twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. In the afternoon, observe its soil condition and water an appropriate additional amount.

3. Autumn

The temperature drops somewhat, and the sunlight is not too scorching, so it can be watered once a day, in the morning or evening.

4. Winter

In winter jasmine must be moved indoors to overwinter, and it can be watered 1 to 2 times a week.

The growing method for jasmine is not difficult; it likes a warm and humid growing environment. Growing jasmine is very intolerant of sticky, heavy soil, and flower lovers need to pay special attention to this point. Jasmine has a long flowering period; create a suitable growing environment for it and let jasmine fill every branch with blooms.
