Rose Pruning and Shaping Methods and Planting Time Explained in Detail
Speaking of roses, I believe everyone is very familiar with them; they are especially common in our lives. There are many varieties of roses, with bright and colorful flowers and extremely high ornamental value, and many people like to grow roses at home or in the courtyard. So do you know how potted roses should be shaped and pruned? Let's find out together below!
How to prune and shape roses
1. Ancient-stump rose bonsai
For ancient-stump rose bonsai, select rose plants with good form and make them into bonsai after slight pruning. Natural forms are generally used, and the shaping method is mainly pruning, occasionally with pulling and bending. The whole bonsai plant varies in height, is well arranged, and full of poetic charm. But during the production process, be careful not to bend the roses too much, to prevent them from breaking or tearing because they cannot bear the strain.
2. Miniature rose bonsai
Choose varieties with shorter plants and graceful posture for production. After cuttings survive, carry out pruning and pulling so that the overall shape is well spaced and balanced, then plant them in exquisite purple clay teapots. When they bloom, they are fresh and elegant, as beautiful as a painting.
3. Combined-style rose bonsai
Select robust roses and plant them in suitable rectangular or oval flower pots. Pay attention to the coordination of flowers of various colors, as well as the coordination of flowers, stems, and leaves. Finally, add stones, trees, and flowers and plants, and the overall shape is as if formed naturally.
When to plant roses
The planting time for roses differs slightly between the north and the south. In the south, autumn is better, because cuttings taken in autumn begin to grow in winter and become strong in spring, so they can successfully pass the summer; in the north, spring is better, and by winter there will already be relatively good plants.
How to plant roses
Roses are relatively tolerant of drought, and the soil should not be too moist, especially not waterlogged. For ground-planted or potted roses, watering should be done by thoroughly watering once, then when the surface soil is dry, water thoroughly again. In particular, the first watering after transplanting must be thorough; if one watering is not thorough, water again immediately until thoroughly soaked. After that, according to the principle of alternating wet and dry soil, water reasonably depending on soil moisture, weather conditions, and the rose's growing season. Some rose enthusiasts, afraid that the roses will dry out and die, water frequently, causing water to accumulate in the soil and making it muddy, which is not good for the respiration of the rose roots, causing root rot and death.
Rose fertilization should be based mainly on coarse fertilizer and base fertilizer. Applying more organic fertilizer is helpful for improving the soil, so that the soil has good water retention, water permeability, and aeration. When applying organic fertilizer as base fertilizer or topdressing, be sure to note that it must be thoroughly decomposed. When applying base fertilizer, avoid piling the fertilizer at the base of the rose roots and stems. When applying liquid topdressing, it is also not suitable to apply concentrated fertilizer. Otherwise, it is unfavorable to the growth of roses, and in severe cases causes death.
Roses are suitable for growing in fertile, loose, breathable, and well-drained neutral sandy loam. For potting soil, a mixture of 40% decomposed horse (cow) manure, 40% garden soil, and 20% sandy soil is loose and breathable; poor water retention and drainage are also the main causes of rose death.
Rose propagation techniques
Mostly cutting propagation is used, and division and layering propagation are also possible. Cuttings can be done all year round, but hardwood cuttings in winter or autumn are preferable. For green cuttings in summer, attention should be paid to water management and temperature control. Otherwise, they are not easy to root. Winter cuttings are generally carried out in a greenhouse or plastic tunnel; if cuttings are taken in the open field, attention should be paid to adding moisture-retention measures. For those propagated by sowing, it is used for sexual hybrid breeding. For a few famous varieties that are difficult to root, grafting propagation is used, and the rootstock is preferably wild rose. Such as yellow series varieties.
Speaking of roses, although they are beautiful and noble, and many people like to grow them at home, everyone must pay attention to the correct cultivation techniques. After all, they are flowers and relatively delicate. If they are not cared for well, various problems can easily appear!
