Schefflera is valued both for its foliage and its flowers, and anyone who likes it will grow a pot of it, placing it in the living room, study and other spots at home, adding a fine decorative effect. But when the Schefflera you are growing shows yellowing leaves and leaf drop, seeing it will make you very sad and affect your mood. Below, the editor introduces some tips for solving these problems.

What to Do When Schefflera Leaves Turn Yellow

1. Apply enough fertilizer, and apply it well

Schefflera needs plenty of nutrients during its growth period. In summer, fertilize once a week, using granular fertilizer such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, applied after loosening the soil. From April to September, apply a diluted fertilizer solution once a month to ensure the potting soil has sufficient nutrients, and do not apply any single element to excess.

If too much fertilizer has been applied, take the Schefflera out of the pot, wash the roots with clean water, rinse several times in a row, then soak the roots in clean water. Once the leaves recover, replace with new soil and replant.

2. Water correctly

When watering, be careful not to water too much; just keep the potting soil moist. In spring, summer and autumn, water about once every 3-4 days, and reduce watering in winter. When the air is dry, sprinkle a little water on the leaves from time to time to increase humidity.

3. Ensure moderate sunlight

Schefflera likes shade; simply place it in a bright spot and it will grow normally. Except in winter, the plant can be kept outdoors or by a window, avoiding direct strong light. In winter, move it indoors to a spot that gets sunlight and raise the temperature appropriately.

Reasons Schefflera Drops Its Leaves

1. Too little light: Schefflera likes semi-shade and is generally grown under bright, indirect light. If the indoor spot where it is placed is rather dark, it will affect the growth of the Schefflera and cause leaf drop.

2. Too much light: Under direct sun exposure, the leaves of Schefflera easily wither, turn yellow and drop, especially when it is suddenly moved from a spot with no sunlight to a spot with strong sunlight for growing; the leaf drop will be even more serious.

3. Insufficient fertilizer: Schefflera has certain fertilizer requirements, especially during the growth period when enough fertilizer is needed. If fertilizer is insufficient, the leaves of the Schefflera will also turn yellow and drop.

4. Too much fertilizer: If the concentration of the nutrient solution in the soil is too high, it causes the cell sap of the plant to seep out, producing plasmolysis, which only makes the edges of old leaves scorch and causes the leaves to drop.

5. Too much watering: Water accumulates in the potting soil, causing root rot, which in turn causes leaf drop.

Solutions for Schefflera Leaf Drop

1. Schefflera should be placed outdoors or by a window and other such spots for growing. It must not be exposed to direct strong light, but it should be given enough indirect light.

2. It should be placed in a cool, ventilated spot, with about 4 hours of light per day being suitable.

3. During the growth period, fertilize once a week, using a granular fertilizer with equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, applied after loosening the soil.

4. If this situation occurs, stop fertilizing immediately and increase the amount of watering so the fertilizer flows out through the drainage holes, or immediately repot, rinse the root ball with water and then replant it in the pot, or remove part of the old soil and replace it with new growing medium.

5. Schefflera likes moisture, but do not water it too much either. Water an appropriate amount each day; if conditions allow, placing the Schefflera outdoors is ideal.

How to Prune Schefflera

Schefflera grows fairly quickly and readily sends out leggy shoots. If the plant is not pruned, the lower leaves tend to drop, the plant loses its shape and its ornamental effect is reduced. In daily care, attention should be paid to shaping and pruning the plant to encourage the growth of side branches and maintain a good plant shape.

For Schefflera plants that have grown for many years, shaping and pruning should be done every spring, removing diseased, pest-damaged and withered branches and cutting back leggy shoots. During the growing season, the plant shape should also be controlled, cutting back leggy shoots or fast-growing branches to maintain the plant shape and increase its ornamental effect.

Schefflera leaves have high ornamental value, so when problems arise they affect its beauty. This shows the importance of care during the growing process, so when growing it we must pay attention to water, fertilizer, temperature, soil and other such issues. If you want your Schefflera to grow healthily, it cannot be separated from your dedicated effort.
