Schefflera is a relatively common plant in everyday life. Because of its high ornamental value and certain medicinal properties, it is deeply loved by consumers. It is now a plant kept by many households, but when cultivating it, some people run into problems due to improper methods, so mastering its cultivation techniques is very important.

How to Grow Schefflera

1. Soil. Schefflera requires deep, loose and fertile soil for planting. For household potted plants, leaf mold or peat soil and garden soil are generally used, mixed evenly with 1/4 river sand or perlite. To ensure the soil is fertile, a small amount of cake fertilizer can be added to the soil as a base fertilizer.

2. Sunlight. Schefflera likes a semi-shaded environment and is best kept in a place with plenty of bright, indirect light, so placing a pot at home is ideal. As long as the home is bright, it can be enjoyed for a long time. In winter it can be moved near a south-facing window; in spring and autumn the pot can be moved outdoors to a well-ventilated spot for a period of care, but be careful to shade it properly, so that direct sun exposure does not cause the leaves to turn yellow and dry.

3. Temperature. Schefflera is not cold-tolerant. In winter, room temperature should be kept above 10°C. If room temperature stays below 8°C for a long time, the leaves will gradually turn yellow and dry; if it drops below 0°C, the leaves will fall off. So winter, the hardest season for Schefflera, requires good control of indoor temperature.

Schefflera Cultivation Methods

1. Potting and planting. Choose healthy young plants with well-developed, intact root systems, and plant them in pots in late autumn or before buds sprout in spring. Before planting, place a layer of tile fragments at the bottom of the container, add a small amount of nutrient soil, place the plant in the pot, then add a small amount of soil so the roots and soil are tightly combined. Then water thoroughly and firm the soil. After planting, newly potted plants should first be placed in a semi-shaded spot for a week, then gradually moved to a sunny spot for normal care.

2. Watering. Schefflera grows well in environments with high air humidity and sufficient soil moisture. In daily care, be sure to replenish water in time, but do not let it become waterlogged, otherwise it will cause a large amount of leaf drop. Under low winter temperatures, watering should be controlled. If Schefflera is grown in a plastic pot, pay attention to timely drainage; water before the soil dries out completely, keeping the soil moist at all times. When the weather is dry, spray around the plant; during the plum rain season, keep it sheltered from rain to avoid water accumulating in the pot.

3. Repotting and pruning. Schefflera needs to be repotted once every spring; if using a plastic pot, note that the soil should be slightly looser. Schefflera grows quickly and easily sprouts leggy branches, so once it matures it needs frequent shaping and pruning to keep the plant neat and attractive. Schefflera kept for many years has long-lived old branches, and the plant shape may become too large; when new buds sprout each year, combined with repotting, it can be heavily pruned, cutting back branches, leaves and old roots.

Precautions for Growing Schefflera

If Schefflera was obtained from cuttings, do not rush to repot it before it takes shape; wait until growth is obvious before repotting. Usually it is repotted only after growing for 2~3 years, and once a year thereafter.

Schefflera Diseases and Their Control

1. Leaf spot disease. Control method: after finding that Schefflera is infected, promptly remove the diseased leaves. During this period keep the potting soil dry and strengthen care. Apply a thin fertilizer once a month, avoiding excessive nitrogen fertilizer. After the disease occurs, carry out timely chemical control; spray 25% Shibaoke emulsifiable concentrate at 1000 times dilution or 40% chlorothalonil suspension at 500 times dilution.

2. Anthracnose. Control method: during care, pay attention to moderate watering, do not let the potting soil become waterlogged, and in June~July appropriately lower the relative humidity of the plant's growing environment. Lower the temperature appropriately so as not to create a suitable habitat for the pathogen. Spray chemicals in the early stage of the disease; you can use 80% mancozeb at 800 times dilution + Haoshi at 3000 times dilution as a spray for control.

The cultivation method for Schefflera is actually very simple. When growing it, be sure to pay attention to temperature and light. The temperature should not be too low, and the light should not be too strong; shade it in summer. Attention should also be paid to fertilizer and water; Schefflera is not tolerant of waterlogging, so drainage must be done properly.
