When camellias bloom, seen from a distance, flowers dot the dense foliage, red ones like clusters of bright red fireballs, white ones like pure white clouds. These camellias race to bloom, bringing boundless spring vitality. But some camellias have flower buds yet cannot bloom. Why is that?

Reasons Why Camellias Have Flower Buds but Won't Bloom and Solutions

Reasons:

1. The potting soil is excessively dry. Insufficient water in the soil severely dehydrates the roots, causing bud drop due to water loss. This is a fairly common reason.

2. The potting soil is too wet. Overwatering easily makes the potting soil overly muddy, causing root hypoxia and root rot, leading to bud drop.

3. Temperature is too high. Camellias should be brought indoors around the Frost's Descent period. After being brought indoors, the room temperature should not be too high; 7-10°C is suitable. If the temperature exceeds 20°C, bud drop is very easily triggered. Too much shade. After being brought indoors, long-term without sunlight is also a cause of bud drop.

4. The indoor environment is excessively dry. Insufficient environmental humidity can also cause bud drop.

5. Camellias prefer slightly acidic soil. Soil and water in the north tend to be more alkaline, and over time the potting soil becomes alkaline. When alkalinity is too high, it can also cause bud drop.

Solutions:

1. You can bury a compound fertilizer high in phosphorus and potassium near the edge of the pot. Phosphorus promotes flower opening. Avoid nitrogen fertilizer; after applying nitrogen fertilizer, buds are prone to not opening.

2. For potted camellias, increasing sunlight exposure promotes blooming, mainly by raising the temperature so the buds open.

4. Keep the potting soil dry, then water thoroughly. Achieving an alternating dry-wet cycle easily promotes blooming.

5. Check whether the camellia has pests or diseases; if present, they will also affect blooming. You can use carbendazim spray to treat disease and omethoate spray to kill insects. Curing pests and diseases can also promote bud opening.

6. Flowers only open when the flowering season arrives; the flowering season is usually February to March.

How to Choose Camellia Varieties

There are many camellia varieties, with over a thousand in China alone. Camellia flower types and colors are also very rich: large-flowered varieties can have flowers reaching over 15 cm in diameter (such as 'Mr. Parks', 'Kramer's Supreme', 'Valentine's Day', etc.), while small-flowered varieties have flowers less than 2 cm in diameter (such as 'Xiangchun', 'Peacock Chun', 'Golden Camellia', etc.). Flower colors include red, pink, purple, white, yellow, red-pink bicolor, red-white bicolor, pink-white bicolor, multiple colors on one plant, and so on. The richness of flower types and colors is dazzling!

1. Ordinary New Year potted flowers (potted plants)

Since camellias bloom right around the Spring Festival, they are very suitable as New Year flowers. If you want to place a few pots at home during the holiday to beautify the living environment, you can, according to your own preferences, buy some varieties with outstanding features, robust plants, and relatively easy management.

For example: 'Mr. Parks' and 'Fire Cascade', which have particularly huge flowers and bright red color; 'Kramer's Supreme', which is fragrant and has large, vividly colored flowers; 'Hualuzhen', which is magnificent and red-white bicolor; 'Eighteen Scholars', whose flower colors are elegant and refined and which can produce multiple colors on one plant; 'Broad Color Band' (Empress No. 2), whose base color is pink with jagged red edges; 'Liexiang', which has an extremely strong fragrance; 'Zhuangyuan Hong', which has a peculiar flower type, and so on.

2. Courtyard and villa landscaping

Camellia is an evergreen plant, ranging from small shrubs to large trees. It can be enjoyed for its flowers, leaves, and tree form, so camellias are extremely suitable for improving the taste and grade of villa and courtyard landscaping.

For camellia trees used in landscaping, the main landscape tree can be the faster-growing 'Hualuzhen' or 'Hongluzhen'. If you are just following a temporary "trend" and do not care much about the lifespan of the camellia tree or the problem of quality degeneration, you can also choose grafted giant "camellia trees." The advantage is that it is relatively easy to obtain a giant "camellia tree"; the disadvantages are that lifespan is not guaranteed, quality degenerates, and the rootstock easily sprouts suckers. For spherical landscaping trees, you can choose low-trunk 'Eighteen Scholars', 'Liexiang', 'Zhuangyuan Hong', etc., which have dense leaves and easily form a spherical shape. For hedges, you can use sasanqua, 'Spring Festival', which has small but densely clustered flowers, etc.

If your finances are especially good and you want the villa to be tasteful and high-grade, the main landscape camellia tree can even be a large seed-grown (ground diameter over 8 cm) precious variety, such as the majestic tree-form, large-flowered, extremely vivid red 'Kramer's Supreme', 'Mr. Parks', and 'Fire Cascade', or high-trunk 'Eighteen Scholars', 'Five Treasures', and 'Liexiang', which can produce multiple colors on one tree, or even more precious varieties such as 'Five-Color Chidan', 'Fendan', and 'Caidan' in the Chidan mutation series.

3. Buying camellias for investment

1. Choose distinctive varieties: When investing in camellias, choosing varieties with unique flower types and colors and outstanding characteristics is one of the key factors in camellia investment. For example, between single-color and bicolor, you should choose bicolor. For example, between 'Hualuzhen' and 'Hongluzhen', you should choose 'Hualuzhen', because 'Hualuzhen' is bicolor while 'Hongluzhen' is single-color, and 'Hualuzhen' is much more attractive than 'Hongluzhen' and also has a smaller existing population than 'Hongluzhen'.

2. Choose cutting-propagated or seed-grown (ungrafted) camellia trees: Grafting is a propagation method, not a means of improving quality. Moreover, the inherent disadvantages of grafted seedlings, such as short lifespan, quality degeneration, and the rootstock easily sprouting suckers, cannot be avoided. A camellia that could originally live for a thousand years cannot have its lifespan guaranteed after grafting. If you buy such a "camellia tree" for investment, the risk of failure will be greatly increased!

3. Try to buy slightly larger camellias: Camellias grow slowly, especially at the medium and small seedling stages, which often take up a very long growing time. A camellia with a ground diameter of 2-3 cm and average growth speed may already have grown for more than ten years, with the trunk diameter increasing by only 0.2-0.3 cm per year on average. Starting from a ground diameter of 3-4 cm, camellia growth speed increases noticeably. From 3-4 cm to 10 cm trunk diameter may take less than 10 years, and the value brought by this growth period also increases significantly.

Selection of Potting Soil and Pots for Camellia Cultivation

According to the growth characteristics of camellias, a slightly acidic, loose, fertile, and well-drained mixed soil should be chosen as potting soil. Particular attention should be paid to good drainage, and calcareous soil must be avoided. The mixing ratio is: red soil 6 parts, orchid soil (leaf mold) 3 parts, fine sandy soil 1-2 parts.

The pot size should be moderate, neither too large nor too small. Generally, the ratio of pot to seedling is: a camellia 40-50 cm tall with a crown width of 20-25 cm is suitable for planting in a purple clay pot or tile pot with a diameter of about 20 cm. Other sizes can be inferred accordingly.

Flowering Period Management

Flowering period management is also of paramount importance. Proper flowering period management can make your camellia produce more flowers, bloom longer, and have beautiful flowers.

Camellias need bud thinning, which should be done when the buds are the size of soybeans. Remove inward-facing buds, deformed buds, and buds on weak branches. Keeping one bud at the top shoot is enough. Timely bud thinning can greatly reduce the plant's burden and prevent buds from dropping due to insufficient nutrition.

During the flowering period, phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer needs to be supplemented so the flowers bloom beautifully and do not easily drop buds. During blooming, keep the soil slightly moist; otherwise bud drop may also occur. Do not casually move the pot during the flowering period, otherwise buds may drop due to severe vibration.

Having said so much, if you want camellias to bloom more and bloom well, the most important thing is to make the camellia grow robustly. Through reasonable water and fertilizer management, appropriate light, and fully understanding the habits of camellias, your camellias will certainly bloom more and more, and more and more beautifully.
