Sometimes you will see a kind of red flower on the road, very beautiful; in fact, that is the kapok flower. Its plant is very tall and has high ornamental value, and it is generally sown with seeds, but the seeds planted in this way usually need to be treated, so let's take a look below at exactly how it is grown.

How to Grow a Kapok Tree

Kapok seeds easily drift everywhere along with the cotton fluff, so if you want to collect seeds you must do so in time. After collecting them, spread them out in the sun and shake out the seeds. If stored too long, the germination rate will decrease or even lose the ability to germinate, so it is best to sow them as soon as they are collected. Before sowing, disinfect the seeds with a 0.3% potassium permanganate solution, then rinse them clean with water, dry them in the sun and sow. Before sowing, it is best to carefully prepare the soil. Broadcast sowing is used; after sowing, cover with 2 cm of soil, press lightly so that the seeds and soil are closely combined, then water thoroughly, and afterward water 1-2 times a day to keep the soil moist.

Kapok Planting Methods

1. Propagation time: For kapok, grafting is suitable in February to March and June to July. In February to March, the temperature rises quickly, and kapok begins to sprout and send out shoots; grafting at this time is easy to survive.

2. Growing soil: Kapok is not strict about soil requirements; sandy soil or heavy clay soil are both suitable. It prefers acidic soil, is relatively drought-tolerant, and also slightly tolerant of waterlogging. Its fertility requirements are not very high; generally, soil with medium fertility and relatively high phosphorus and potassium fertilizer is suitable.

3. Growing humidity: During the growing season, keep the soil moist for kapok, or plant it directly into a leak-proof pot, which saves the trouble of watering every day. When the temperature is relatively high, also pay attention to spraying water on the leaves to maintain humidity.

4. Growing temperature: Kapok is not cold-tolerant. In East China, it can overwinter in the open ground with slight protection, and the winter temperature should not be lower than 5°C.

5. Growing light: Kapok has a relatively wide adaptability to light and can grow well in full sun or semi-shade, but avoid scorching sun exposure.

Planting Precautions

1. Fertilizer application: It is not strict about soil requirements; sandy soil or heavy clay soil are both suitable. It prefers acidic soil, is relatively drought-tolerant, and also slightly tolerant of waterlogging. It does not require much fertilizer; generally, soil with medium fertility and relatively high phosphorus and potassium fertilizer is suitable. When planting, it is advisable to apply decomposed cake fertilizer or garbage as base fertilizer, and before flowering and during peak flowering, apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizer as a top dressing.

2. Watering points: During the growth process of kapok, pay attention to keeping the soil moist; watering it in a timely manner is enough.

3. Pruning essentials: During the growing period of kapok, promptly remove residual branches and residual flowers. For leggy branches, control their length by pinching off the growing tips to promote new branches, making the plant full and the crown shape good, and also extending the flowering period.

Propagation Methods of Kapok

1. Seed propagation

Every year in October, the fruits grow in clusters. Collect them and pile them in a cool place. After several days, spread them out to dry in the sun; the fruits split and the seeds fall out. Remove the fluff and debris, dry them in the shade, and store them. Sow between February and March in early spring. Before sowing, force the seeds to sprout. Either drilling or broadcasting can be used. The seeding rate per hectare is 45-60 kg.

After sowing, follow general seedling-raising measures and strengthen management. When the seedlings grow to 5-6 cm, they can be transplanted and grown in separate beds. One-year-old seedlings reach more than 50 cm in height and are released from the nursery and planted in autumn or the following spring.

2. Cutting propagation

Before flowering and sprouting in early spring, collect strong 1-2 year old branches with plump winter buds, cut them into 20 cm long cuttings, and insert them densely in a sand bed. Water to keep them warm; after leaves grow and roots form, move them to a seedling bed for cultivation. Thicker large branches (5-10 cm in diameter) can also be used for large-trunk burial cuttings, with trunk length 80-100 cm, plant spacing 80 cm, and pit depth 30 cm. First pour water into the bottom of the pit, mix it into mud, place the trunk cutting in the hole, then fill it with soil and tread it firm. Never insert it forcefully, so as not to damage or break the cutting and affect survival.

After burial cutting, water frequently to keep it moist. After survival, pay attention to removing excess sprouts and axillary buds, retaining 1 strong sprout to grow upward, so as to form an excellent main trunk. After 1-2 years of cultivation, it can be released from the nursery and planted. When planting, it should be sparse rather than dense, and it is not suitable for contiguous planting; generally, it is planted alone or in rows, with plant spacing 8 m × 10 m or sparser. For planting, it is advisable to dig a large pit, put in enough base fertilizer, and plant with a soil ball in February to March, watering thoroughly to settle the roots. In the first 3 years, apply fertilizer 2-3 times each year to promote its growth.

It seems that besides sowing, kapok can also be propagated by cuttings. Everyone can choose the method they like for planting. Although the method of growing kapok is relatively simple, the key to planting lies in its care. Fertilizing, watering, and pruning are all key, and each of these steps must be done carefully.
