When it comes to azaleas, everyone must be very familiar with them, because they are especially common in daily life. Azaleas are also called “ying shan hong” (mountain red). Their flowers are relatively bright in color, graceful in shape, and have extremely high ornamental value, and are deeply loved and sought after by everyone. So do you know how to take cuttings of azaleas? Let's go and learn about it together with the editor below!

How to Propagate Azaleas by Cuttings

Azalea cuttings are best taken in late spring and early summer, but different varieties sprout new branches at different times. Usually Western azaleas are in late May, spring azaleas in early June, and eastern azaleas and summer azaleas in mid-June. But during the plum rain season in Jiangnan, the air is mild and humid, which is even more favorable for the cuttings to heal and take root.

1. First, select a robust mother plant.

2. Select lush branches and leaves that grow upward, and cut them off from the base. Remove the lower leaves, keeping only 2~3 leaves at the top.

3. After pruning, tie the leaves together and soak them in warm water for 30 minutes. Poke a few small holes in the prepared potting soil. Insert the soaked branches into the holes and press them firm with your fingers.

4. Water thoroughly and place in a cool place. If the humidity is low, you can wrap the flower pot with plastic film. After about three weeks, the cutting seedlings will adapt to the new environment and can be moved to a bright place with proper sunlight.

How Azaleas Fare in Winter

1. Watering

Azaleas like a humid environment and must not be too dry. During the flowering period of azaleas, they should be given sufficient water even more. In winter, the growth of azaleas has actually become slow, and at this time the demand for water is not great, so generally watering once every 5 days is enough, and it is best to do it at noon on a sunny day. Second, if growing them indoors, a certain air humidity needs to be ensured, and you can spray water on the plant and leaves, but it is best not to spray during flowering, otherwise it will cause the azaleas to wither.

2. Fertilizing Azaleas in Winter

In winter, there is actually no need to fertilize azaleas, but in January a base fertilizer should be applied, and either soybean cake or bone meal will do.

3. Winter Temperature for Azaleas

In winter, temperature is also very important, but different varieties of azaleas have different temperature requirements. Spring azaleas, summer azaleas, and hairy azaleas are relatively cold-tolerant, and the winter temperature only needs to be 0°C. But Western azaleas require a temperature above 2°C, and below this value insulation measures must be taken, otherwise the plant will be frostbitten.

Therefore, when growing azaleas in winter, it is best to keep the temperature at 8°C——10°C. Indoors, keep them away from air conditioners and heating.

4. Winter Pruning of Azaleas

Azalea bonsai need to be shaped through pruning and tying, and moderate pruning can also be done in winter, mainly thinning and heading back, cutting off overly dense branches as well as leggy branches and diseased or weak branches. At this time spring azaleas have already begun to produce flower buds, and overly dense buds can be appropriately thinned to concentrate nutrients.

How to Water Azaleas

In spring and autumn, azaleas are in a period of vigorous growth, so sufficient water must be ensured. Especially in spring, the frequency of watering should be appropriately increased or decreased, and at the same time spray more water on the leaf surface to maintain environmental humidity and reduce water evaporation from the leaves.

In summer, the temperature is relatively high and water evaporates quickly, so you can water once each in the morning and in the evening.

In winter, the temperature is relatively low, azaleas go dormant, and their physiological activity weakens, so they do not need too much water. As long as the potting soil is kept from drying out, appropriately reduce the frequency of watering.

In addition, watering should also be reduced during the flowering period. Too much water will cause buds to drop or flowers to fade early, so just ensure the potting soil is not short of water.

Pruning Methods for Azaleas After Flowering

1. After azaleas bloom, the first step is to prune the spent flowers. After the azalea flowers fade, the spent flowers have no ornamental value, so it is best to cut them off, but do not cut off the entire flowering branch tip. Just cut off the spent flowers together with the receptacle.

2. The second step is after pruning. Actually, azaleas cannot be pruned before flowering, so this pruning after flowering is very necessary. The branches that need pruning are mainly diseased and weak branches, leggy branches, and deformed branches.

3. When azaleas are flowering, because they consume a relatively large amount of nutrients, some branches will appear rather thin and weak, affecting the ornamental look. These branches can be cut off, which will make the whole plant shape look more compact.

4. There are also leggy branches that need to be cut off, and appropriate thinning will make the plant shape better.

As mentioned above, although azaleas are very beautiful, some of their varieties contain a certain toxicity, so everyone must pay attention! However, the common azaleas with bright red petals are non-toxic, and also have very good medicinal value!
