Lantana - just from the name you can imagine its beauty, with multiple colors seen on a single flower, so its ornamental value hardly needs mentioning. Lantana is distributed fairly widely in our country, and although it gives off an unpleasant odor and is somewhat toxic, none of this can stop flower lovers from growing it.

How to Grow Lantana in Pots

1. Fertilizer and water: For potting, a loose, fertile sandy loam is ideal, though the plant is not demanding. During the growing season, apply a decomposed liquid fertilizer once every 10 days, and while watering, spray 3% urea twice every 10 days, which can make the leaves thicker and greener. When planting, apply organic fertilizer as a base fertilizer; water initially to promote growth, and once the plant is established and growing vigorously, reduce watering. In open-ground cultivation, bury the trailing branches into the soil, and they can gradually spread into a large clump.

2. Sunlight: Lantana prefers a sunny, well-lit environment. During the growing season it can be kept outdoors in a sunny spot, and even in midsummer it does not need shading, but good ventilation is required. If light is insufficient, the plant will grow leggy, with thin, elongated stems and branches, and it will bloom sparsely, seriously affecting its ornamental value.

3. Pruning: Lantana grows quickly, so during cultivation, promptly cut off branches and leaves that affect its shape to keep the tree form attractive. After each flowering, cut back the overly long tender branches. In late autumn or early winter, before moving the plant indoors, give it a heavy pruning, cutting back all the current year's branches appropriately.

Lantana Pot Cultivation Methods and Precautions

I. Cultivation Methods

1. Soil

Lantana is highly adaptable and not demanding about soil. Sandy soil, heavy clay soil, acidic soil or calcareous soil can all support its growth, but it grows best in fertile, loose sandy soil.

2. Watering

Lantana prefers a moist environment. During the growing season, keep the potting soil moist, avoid excessive dryness, and be sure to spray water on the leaves to increase air humidity.

3. Fertilizing

Lantana has a long flowering period. In spring, summer and autumn, apply a top dressing 2-3 times each month, and fertilize promptly after flowering. During the growing season, apply a light fertilizer mainly of phosphorus and potassium about once every 15 days to provide sufficient nutrients, and combine this with watering so the plant blooms more. Spraying 3% urea twice every 10 days can make the leaves thicker and greener. After moving indoors in winter, stop fertilizing.

4. Light

Lantana prefers a sunny, well-lit environment.

5. Temperature

Lantana is native to tropical regions. After being introduced and cultivated in other climatic zones, it was found that it can safely overwinter in winter as long as the temperature does not drop below 8°C. The suitable growing temperature is 8-30°C.

II. Precautions

1. Lantana is toxic

Although lantana can be used as medicine, it is toxic. Taken internally, it can cause reactions such as dizziness, nausea and vomiting, so the dosage must be controlled to prevent adverse reactions. It is contraindicated for pregnant women and people with weak constitutions.

2. Pay attention to pruning

Lantana needs pruning to maintain an attractive plant shape and abundant flowering. Lantana tolerates pruning well. To make it into a beautiful rounded canopy, it needs frequent pinching. When the seedlings grow to about 10 cm tall, pinch them to encourage branching from the base, keeping 3-5 branches as main branches. Once the main branches reach a certain length, pinch them again so the main branches grow evenly.

Propagation Methods for Lantana

1. Sowing: Sowing can be done in late autumn in pots under high humidity and warm conditions, or in spring. In South China, seedlings grown from seed can be used to plant flower beds, and they can bloom by September of that year. After the fruit ripens, pick it and pile it to compost, then soak and rub it in water to remove the flesh and obtain the seeds. The seeds must not be allowed to lose water; they can be sown immediately in autumn as collected, or stored mixed with sand and sown again in spring. After sowing, the temperature during the germination stage should be kept above 20C. The germination rate is about 60%, and seedlings sown in the south can bloom in autumn of the same year.

2. Cuttings: Cuttings are mostly taken in May. Take one-year-old branches as cuttings, with each two nodes forming one segment, keep the 2 leaves on the upper node and cut them in half, and insert the lower node into plain sand or a substrate made of half plain sand and half fully decomposed humus soil mixed evenly. After inserting, shade them, cover with film to retain moisture and warmth, keep the cutting bed moist and the air humidity at 80-90%, and in about 1 month they will root and sprout new shoots.

3. Layering: Lantana plants branch extremely abundantly and root where they touch soil, so flexible branches can be nicked and pressed into the soil; once the root system has grown, sever the branch and divide the plant.

The Cultivation Value of Lantana

1. Ornamental: Lantana has green foliage and abundant flowers, and is brightly colored year-round. Its flowering period is long, and its flower colors are beautiful, including red, orange, yellow, pink and white. Some flowers are yellow or pink when they first open, gradually turning orange-yellow or orange-red, and finally turning red. The flowers are small and unique, appearing very beautiful, giving it a certain ornamental value.

2. Bonsai: Lantana's young branches are soft and suitable for making many forms of bonsai. They can be processed into different forms of bonsai, such as single-trunk style, double-trunk style, waterside style, and slanting-trunk style, and are also very suitable for home decoration. Because the leaves are relatively large, the canopy is often shaped into an unrestrained natural form, or deliberately trained into a rounded flat shape.

This special flower, lantana, is especially interesting to plant in the garden, and its cultivation method is not very difficult. Although it gives off a slight unpleasant odor, this odor can repel mosquitoes and flies, so flower lovers who need it should hurry and grow it. During cultivation, pruning more will help it bloom more.
