How to Propagate Mock Orange (Aglaia odorata)? Detailed Guide to Hydroponic Propagation Methods
A plant's method of propagation determines whether it can grow and survive widely. Most endangered species are on the brink because they encounter difficulties when reproducing; frankly, this is also a form of natural selection. As a relatively common species in the world, the mock orange (Aglaia odorata) should have quite a few methods of propagation.
How to Propagate Mock Orange
1. Cutting propagation
Cuttings can be taken from either hardwood or softwood.
1. Hardwood cuttings require selecting one- to two-year-old mock orange branches as cuttings, cutting them into several segments, each about 8-10 cm long, carried out in April and May.
Softwood cuttings require selecting semi-lignified branches of the current year, with cuttings 10 cm long. Plain sand, peat soil or perlite can be used as the cutting medium.
2. When taking cuttings, first poke holes in the medium, then insert the cuttings, making sure the cuttings and medium are in close contact; you can press gently with your hand. Then water and keep them shaded for care.
2. Layering propagation
Layering propagation can be carried out from May to September, and it is best to choose the rainy season, when the survival rate is relatively high. Layering mainly uses the air layering method.
1. Preparations before air layering: Twenty days before air layering, fertilize and irrigate the mock orange so that the plant grows healthily and vigorously. Prepare an appropriate amount of tying rope, moss, a girdling knife or grafting knife, plastic microfilm strips, branch shears and a syringe.
2. Air layering technique: 1) Soak the moss in water for one hour, then take it out. 2) Choose a healthy, well-growing plant, girdle the branch, and at the same time use a grafting knife to gently scrape the cambium at the girdling wound to break it, with the aim of making the new plant take root. 3) Wrap the moss with plastic microfilm and tie it around the girdling wound.
3. Care and management work after air layering: Strengthen fertilizer and water management, fertilize and water in a timely manner. Carry out pest and disease control, and promptly spray specific agents to prevent and control pests and diseases. After the new plant's root system has grown, you can select well-growing plants to prune, remove from the tree and transplant.
Hydroponic Cultivation Methods for Mock Orange
1. Selecting the plant
If you want to grow it hydroponically, you first need to select a suitable plant for hydroponics. Choose healthy, well-growing branches for hydroponics, as this can increase the probability of success.
2. Preparation of tools
Scissors or a sharp knife, foam board, potassium permanganate and other disinfectants, mineral water bottles, adhesive tape, etc.
3. Operation method
1. Disinfect the scissors or carving knife, and trim the lower end of the mock orange branch, preferably making a diagonal cut to increase the contact area of the diagonal surface.
2. Disinfect the treated wound, then wait for it to dry naturally.
3. Place the mineral water bottle on top of the pre-prepared foam board, and cut the foam board according to the bottom of the mineral water bottle.
4. Pass the prepared mock orange branch through the foam board. It is best not to insert too many plants into one foam board; keep a certain distance.
5. Cut the mineral water bottle in half around the middle, but do not separate it completely; it is best to leave a little connected. Fill it with an appropriate amount of water.
6. Place the foam board with the mock orange branch inserted into the mineral water bottle and secure it. Then rejoin the upper part of the mineral water bottle with the lower part and seal it with adhesive tape.
4. Precautions
For hydroponic mock orange, remember to change the water regularly and be sure to keep the water clean. In addition, a few days after hydroponics begins, the mock orange may show yellowing leaves, rotten leaves and wilting. The way to handle this at this time is simply to promptly prune away the yellow leaves. Gradually, some small white dots will appear one after another below the plant. Do not think that is mold; that is a normal phenomenon and a sign that the mock orange is growing. Also, do not throw it away midway just because the leaves turn black; wait patiently and it will definitely succeed. Afterward, once you see small roots growing below, you can move it to a hydroponic container and add nutrient solution.
When Does Mock Orange Bloom
Mock orange is a plant with a relatively long flowering period. Its flowering period is from July to August, or it blooms in all four seasons.
Mock orange is quite distinctive, with axillary panicle-like inflorescences, yellow flowers and a very fragrant scent.
Is Mock Orange Toxic
Mock orange is not toxic. Many people have a lot of concerns about the plants they grow, but science has proven that mock orange is not toxic. On the contrary, mock orange has many effects, and these effects are beneficial to people. So there is no need for everyone to worry about this issue.
Mock orange can be propagated both by cuttings and by layering. These two propagation methods each have their own benefits and advantages. Mock orange is also a plant that can be grown hydroponically. Through hydroponics, we can better observe the entire process of the mock orange's growth and development.
