How to Grow Fuchsia? Your Guide to Cultivation Methods and Precautions
The fuchsia has a peculiar flower shape that is very interesting. Especially when it blooms, while other flowers open eagerly upward, it does the opposite, with its flowers hanging downward, looking like little lanterns. This has captured many people's hearts, and they all want to grow a pot at home so they can see it every day. So how exactly do you grow it, and what things need attention?
How to Grow Fuchsia
1. Soil: For potted fuchsia, the growing medium should be fertile, loose, well-draining potting soil. Generally, you can evenly mix leaf mold, sandy loam, decomposed organic fertilizer and phosphate fertilizer, without applying base fertilizer, to avoid root rot.
2. Watering: For fuchsia, usually follow the principle of watering when dry and letting it dry out between waterings. In dry spring weather and hot, high-temperature summer seasons, you can spray water on the branches and leaves 1-2 times a day. Do not water too much and cause waterlogging in the pot.
In winter, when room temperature is low, watering must be strictly controlled and fertilizing stopped to prevent root rot. After each fertilizing and watering, loosen the soil promptly to improve aeration.
3. Sunlight: Fuchsia prefers shade, but this does not mean it does not need sunlight. Apart from needing shade in summer, in other seasons it should still receive some warm, gentle sunlight.
Fuchsia Cultivation Methods
1. Repotting and changing pots: Seedlings that have survived cuttings or have been sown all need to go through several repottings from small pots to medium pots to large pots. The plant needs repotting once each year before budding in spring or autumn, and the growing medium should be fertile, loose, well-draining potting soil.
Generally, you can evenly mix leaf mold, sandy loam, decomposed organic fertilizer and phosphate fertilizer, without applying base fertilizer, to avoid root rot.
2. Fertilizing: Because fuchsia grows quickly and blooms many times, during the growing period you should apply thin fertilizer frequently, about once every 10 days with thin cake fertilizer or compound fertilizer. During the flowering period, apply a liquid fertilizer mainly of phosphorus and potassium once a month, but stop fertilizing in high-temperature seasons.
Before fertilizing, the pot soil should be on the dry side. After fertilizing, spray water once with a fine nozzle to prevent leaves from getting fertilizer water on them and rotting.
3. Temperature: The growing temperature for fuchsia is 10~28°C. In summer, the temperature must not exceed 30°C, so cooling work should be done well in summer; in winter, sufficient sunlight is required, and the cultivation temperature must not be lower than 5°C, otherwise it will cause cold damage, and insulation measures must be taken.
In addition, whether in winter or summer, attention must be paid to ventilation.
Precautions for Fuchsia
1. Fuchsia by nature likes cool, humid climates. The suitable growing temperature is 10~28°C. Under hot and dry conditions, it enters a semi-dormant state. In summer, use shading, sprinkling water and other methods to lower the temperature and increase air humidity, otherwise it will cause leaf drop, bud drop and flower drop.
2. In spring and autumn, fuchsia should be placed in a sunny spot for cultivation, otherwise insufficient light will affect flower bud development and blooming. In summer, shade it to avoid leaf scorching that affects blooming.
3. Because fuchsia has the characteristics of fast growth and multiple bloomings, in spring and autumn it should be fertilized and watered more. In summer, control fertilizer and water, and provide shade and cooling.
Fuchsia Pruning Methods
1. Pruning at the seedling stage
Pruning and shaping fuchsia at the seedling stage is mainly to cultivate a graceful plant shape. Generally, when the small fuchsia seedling grows to 30 cm to 40 cm, you need to pinch off the top of the main stem, remove overlapping adjacent branches, shorten long branches to encourage branching, and at any time remove side branches growing inward to maintain a graceful plant shape.
2. Pruning during the flowering period
In northern China, the full flowering period of fuchsia is from April to July, so generally the last pinching should stop in late March of spring. Fuchsia blooms in mid-to-late April, but because the branch tips keep blooming and extending, when the flowering branches grow to a certain length, the tips should be pinched off, and the new branches produced can continue to bloom.
So during the flowering period of fuchsia, you can at any time remove the small branches and leaves growing from the central part of the plant to avoid nutrient consumption and help ventilation and light penetration.
3. Pruning after flowering
Every year in July, when the temperature reaches above 30°C, the fuchsia plant enters a semi-dormant state, and the leaves become weak. Generally, heavy pruning is carried out at this time to reduce nutrient consumption.
At the same time, it helps fuchsia get through the summer. During pruning, shorten all long branches of the fuchsia, leaving only the main branches, and remove some old leaves, placing it in a cool place to spend the summer. During the summer period, any flower buds that appear should also be removed. In September of autumn, new branches grow, and the plant shape becomes more compact and beautiful.
If you want fuchsia to grow well, care during the planting process is very important. In addition, pruning is also the key to promoting good growth. There are different pruning methods at different stages. We should prune according to the actual situation combined with the methods taught above, and then you will be able to see lush, thriving fuchsia.
