How to Grow Broadleaf Lady Palm: Cultivation Methods and Precautions
Broadleaf lady palm (Rhapis excelsa) is an evergreen foliage plant that is often used to make bonsai and is an excellent plant for home decoration. Broadleaf lady palm generally grows in clumps, with upright stems, evergreen throughout the four seasons, resembling bamboo in form yet not bamboo, beautiful and elegant, and placed indoors it has a strong tropical flavor. So, how do you grow broadleaf lady palm? What should be noted in daily cultivation?
How to Grow Broadleaf Lady Palm
Broadleaf lady palm prefers a warm, humid, semi-shaded, well-ventilated environment. It is relatively drought-tolerant, afraid of the blazing sun, and slightly cold-tolerant, able to withstand low temperatures of 0°C. It grows well in slightly acidic sandy soil rich in humus. Therefore, during cultivation, good sun protection work must be done in summer.
Broadleaf Lady Palm Cultivation Methods and Precautions
I. Cultivation Methods
1. Soil
The soil for planting broadleaf lady palm can be leaf mold + garden soil + river sand, evenly mixed. When planting, add an appropriate amount of base fertilizer to the soil; a fired clay pot is sufficient for the flower pot.
2. Light
It should be placed in a warm, humid, ventilated, shaded environment for care. On ordinary days, place the flower pot under the shade of trees. Broadleaf lady palm naturally grows slowly, especially when the summer sun is strong, so the shading degree should be above 50%.
3. Watering
In summer, when temperatures are higher, the soil tends to dry out, so water once in the morning and once in the evening, and also spray the leaf surfaces with water. In spring and autumn, do not water too frequently; just keep the pot soil moist and ensure the pot soil does not accumulate water. In winter, appropriately control watering, and choose noon on sunny days for watering as much as possible.
4. Fertilizing
In spring and autumn, apply a decomposed liquid fertilizer once every 3~4 weeks to promote plant growth.
In summer, apply thin fertilizer frequently; add a small amount of ferrous sulfate to the fertilizer to make the leaves verdant. Fertilizing 1~2 times per month is sufficient.
In May, paclobutrazol can be applied by watering, which can effectively control plant height and make it stocky.
5. Pruning and Repotting
Mainly cut off the withered and yellow leaves so that the branches have a sense of layering.
Repot once every two years; new plants can be appropriately divided. Repotting is generally done in March~April each year; replace part of the old soil, disinfect, and then plant.
II. Precautions
1. During the growing period, broadleaf lady palm should frequently have water sprayed on its leaves; it is suitable for pot cultivation.
2. Each fertilizing should be in small amounts and frequent. Organic fertilizer should be the main type, with trace fertilizers as a supplement.
3. Broadleaf lady palm needs a large amount of water. When watering, pour from the growing point of the broadleaf lady palm downward, letting the clear water flow from top to bottom to the roots, keeping the humidity inside the pot.
How to Propagate Broadleaf Lady Palm by Seed
1. Choose loose and permeable soil as the seeding substrate, usually a mixture of leaf mold and river sand, etc.
2. Before sowing, the seeds can be treated by soaking in warm water (soak in warm water at 30~35°C for two days), and sow after the seeds begin to germinate.
3. Because germination is usually uneven, after sowing the soil covering should be slightly deeper.
4. Generally, germination occurs 1~2 months after sowing, and the germination rate can reach about 80%. When the cotyledons of the seedlings reach 8~10 cm in length, they can be transplanted.
5. It should be noted that when transplanting, 3-5 plants must be planted as one clump to facilitate survival and growth.
Control Methods for Main Diseases of Broadleaf Lady Palm
I. Anthracnose
1. Combined with winter and spring pruning, clean up fallen leaves and weeds on the surface of the pot soil.
2. In the early stage of the disease, regularly spray Guoguang Yintai wettable powder 600-800 times dilution, Guoguang carbendazim, and chlorothalonil for prevention. For mild cases, use Guoguang Yingna wettable powder 400-600 times dilution, or Guoguang Bixian emulsifiable concentrate 500-600 times dilution for foliar spraying for control, using continuously 2-3 times with an interval of 7-10 days.
II. Leaf Spot Disease
Leaf spot disease, one of the diseases of broadleaf lady palm
1. Strengthen management; do not apply too much nitrogen fertilizer; it is advisable to increase potassium fertilizer to improve the plant's disease resistance.
2. In the early stage of the disease, spray 50% captan wettable powder 300~500 times dilution once a week, continuously spraying 3 times.
III. Bud Rot
1. Normally strengthen ventilation and light transmission, and strictly prevent moisture from remaining on the leaf surface for a long time.
2. In the early stage of the disease, when only a small number of diseased leaves are infected, promptly remove the diseased leaves and stems, and spray carbendazim to sterilize, and ventilate promptly.
3. When the disease is severe, spray 80% mancozeb wettable powder 500 times dilution, or 1:1:100 Bordeaux mixture, spraying the leaves alternately, once every 10 days, continuously 3~4 times.
Broadleaf lady palm has an elegant posture, with small and dense leaves, an upright bearing, and is evergreen throughout the four seasons, making it very suitable for making bonsai and keeping at home. In addition, broadleaf lady palm can relieve visual fatigue and relax the brain, and can be placed in semi-shaded places such as a study or living room, to be enjoyed when you are tired from work.
