The kumquat is a particularly delicious and nutritious fruit; not only is it tasty, but the golden-yellow kumquats hanging on the branches are especially beautiful and attractive. Many people in daily life like to grow kumquat trees at home or in the courtyard as decorative plants, so how should a potted kumquat tree be grown? Let's learn about the growing and care methods for kumquat trees together below!

Potted Kumquat Tree Growing Methods

1. Soil

It likes relatively fertile, loose soil, preferably sandy and slightly acidic. If growing it as a potted plant, you can use rotted leaves plus sandy soil with a little fertilizer added, and it will be ready to use.

2. Temperature and Humidity

The temperature range it needs is between 22-28°C. If the room temperature is too high, it cannot fully enter dormancy, and its growth the following year will be poor, with a tendency to drop flowers. In winter, as long as the room temperature does not get low enough to freeze water, there will be no adverse effect on its growth. Although it likes humidity, it is afraid of waterlogging; if the soil in the pot is too moist, its roots will easily rot, so during its growing period the soil only needs to be appropriately moist.

3. Light

It likes areas with relatively long sunshine hours, warmth, and water. When caring for it, place it in a suitable area. If there is not enough light and the atmosphere is too shady, it will grow rampant branches and leaves, and the flowers and fruit it produces will be few. Because it likes coolness in summer, if the summer sun is too strong, it still needs to be shaded.

4. Fertilizing

It loves fertilizer. From the time its buds begin to sprout until it produces flowers, you can give it fermented fertilizer water once a week. When summer comes, give it more phosphorus fertilizer to promote the formation of flower buds and fruit. On rainy days, promptly pour out the water in the pot, otherwise the roots will rot.

What Fertilizer to Apply When Cultivating Kumquat

When potting a kumquat, choose relatively loose soil, with soil that tends toward acidic being most suitable. Before planting, appropriately place some fertilizer at the bottom of the potting soil to provide for its early growth needs; use humus soil combined with cake fertilizer for the soil mix.

After the kumquat's branches have fully grown, apply phosphorus fertilizer once, which can increase the number of flower buds and make the kumquat bear more fruit.

How to Water a Potted Kumquat

1. Watering is a meticulous job; even differences in flower pots will affect the quality of watering. Some kumquat seedlings are large but the pot is small; in this case, water a little more. Conversely, if the seedling is very small but the pot is very large, water a little less.

2. If the kumquat is in its golden period of growth, water more during the vigorous growth period, and try not to water during the dormancy period.

3. This point is easy to understand: when the weather is hot, water evaporates naturally faster, so the amount of watering should also be increased; conversely, when it is daylight or cloudy, you can water a little less.

4. When spring has just arrived, it is the golden time for its growth. At this time, as the temperature gets higher and higher, the amount of water given should be increased a little. In early spring, watering the kumquat must be completed before noon. Summer is relatively hot, and the kumquat's growing environment is also good, but transpiration is greater, so it needs more water. Everyone knows that in summer, watering is not allowed at noon, so the watering time should be in the early morning or evening. In early autumn, the temperature gradually drops, and the kumquat's flowers bloom relatively more slowly, so water less.

Precautions

1. In spring, the weather is relatively dry and windy, so you need to sprinkle some water on its leaves every day to help increase humidity. In summer, spray it with water two or three times a day; if it is during the flowering period, pause spraying, otherwise the flowers will rot and fewer fruits will form.

2. To make it produce more fruit, pruning it is necessary. Before its buds have grown large, give it a heavy pruning, remove the dead branches and leaves on the tree, and leave only three or four healthy branches. For each branch, only keep the two or three buds near the base, and cut off all the rest.

Through the above content, I believe everyone has gained some understanding of the care methods for kumquat trees. Potted kumquat trees are generally relatively small; when they bear fruit, they are both delicious and especially beautiful and attractive! If you like them, hurry and plant a pot!
