How to pinch back winter jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum)? A detailed guide to the pinching method

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
Many plants need to be pinched back, because only in this way can the growth of side branches be brought out and the whole plant grow fuller. Of course, some plants, such as sunflowers, do not need pinching back, but winter jasmine does. So what should we pay attention to when carrying out this operation on winter jasmine? What are the specific timing and method? How exactly should we do the pinching? Today, we will answer these questions one by one.

1. Timing

Because it will grow new branches, in order to avoid the branches becoming too long - and of course, besides this reason, it is also because its flowers are relatively large and tend to open in clusters on new branches, while old branches rarely bloom - we need to pinch back two or three times between May and July. Pinching too early may affect the development of the root system, may make the young seedlings weak, and some of the later growth will also be affected. Therefore, it is best to do it a bit later and let it grow fully, rather than too early. If pinching is done too early, when the seedling has four or five true leaves and its vigorous growth has only just begun, then if we pinch too early, we give a severe blow to the flower that has just started its own path of growth.

2. Method

The targets of pinching are branches that have grown excessively or branches that have grown uselessly. Neither of these is needed, because they not only make the plant's shape unattractive, but also affect the flowering and fruiting of other branches.

Each time you pinch back, only two pairs of buds can be left at the base of the new branch. For those plants growing vigorously, they can no longer be pinched back after July. Plants that grow sparsely and are not strong do not need to be pinched back so frequently.

In addition, after the winter jasmine flowers fade, we need to cut off the withered branches, diseased roots and overly crowded branches from the base, so that nutrients will also be concentrated together, and only then will the plant's shape look good and the whole thing be neater.

Pinching back in winter is not appropriate. If you want to prune the whole plant, it must also be based on its habits; not all woody plants are suitable for winter pruning. For example, winter jasmine blooms in spring, so winter is not very suitable for pruning. Pruning at this time will cut off some bud branches, and the effect of the spring flowers will not be very good.
