How to Grow Miniature Roses: Master the Cultivation Methods and Precautions
Miniature rose is a common variety of rose. It gets its name because its appearance is relatively small and compact. Miniature roses have high ornamental value and are currently very popular among consumers on the market. Many people want to grow them, but before cultivating, surely everyone still needs to have a comprehensive understanding of their cultivation methods.
How to Grow Miniature Roses
1. Light: To keep miniature roses blooming continuously, they need long hours of light. Roses can only grow robustly under full-sun conditions. For potted roses, aside from needing appropriate shading during the high temperatures of summer, they can receive full-day sunlight at all other times.
2. The most suitable growing temperature for miniature roses is 18~20°C. Therefore, in April~May and September~October each year, the flowers are larger and the colors are vivid. As the temperature rises and stabilizes around 30°C, the flowers become smaller in color, faint in scent, low in ornamental value, and susceptible to pests and diseases.
Miniature Rose Cultivation Methods and Precautions
I. Cultivation Methods:
1. Watering. Miniature roses have small plants and shallow roots. Before spring sprouting, the potting soil should be kept moist. Do not water if the soil is not dry. After sprouting, gradually increase the amount of watering. Generally, water once before 10 AM each day, and in the afternoon water an appropriate amount according to the moisture condition of the potting soil. In summer, water once in the morning and once in the evening, and generally do not water at night.
2. Fertilizing. Miniature roses like fertilizer. During the vigorous growth periods of spring and autumn, apply fertilizer once every 10~15 days. Either organic fertilizer or compound fertilizer is fine. Stop fertilizing during the high-temperature season in summer and the low-temperature period in winter.
3. Propagation. Miniature roses are mostly propagated by cuttings, and can also be propagated by division or layering. Cuttings can be taken in all four seasons, but hardwood cuttings in winter or autumn are preferable. For softwood cuttings in summer, pay attention to water management and temperature control. Grafting can also be used. The commonly used rootstock is thornless rose. Perform cleft grafting in early spring or budding in the growing season, with budding giving especially good results.
II. Precautions:
Repot once every 1~2 years, remove about 2/3 of the old soil, and replace it with loose, fertile soil rich in organic matter. This is mostly done before spring sprouting. While repotting, cut off dead roots, rotten roots, and roots damaged by pests and diseases, shorten overly long roots, and thin out overly dense roots and some old roots to encourage the growth of new roots and promote vigorous growth.
How to Prune Miniature Roses
1. First, during the flowering period of miniature roses, when the flowers fade, cut off 8-12 cm along with the branches below the flowers. Before spring sprouting, heavy pruning is also needed. Generally retain 3-4 main branches, and leave 3-5 cm at the base of each branch.
2. Second, be careful to promptly remove spent flowers from miniature roses. This is essential work that can concentrate nutrients and promote more flowers and a longer flowering period. Otherwise, some axillary buds close beneath the spent flowers are prone to sprouting, thereby producing weak branches, which not only consume the plant's nutrients but also ruin the plant shape. The flowers produced are mostly deformed or poor-quality small flowers.
Miniature Rose Pests and Control
1. Aphids. Control: Aphids gather on rose buds, tender leaves, and flower buds to suck their sap. In severe cases, there will be honey-oil-like black secretions, affecting flower quality and rose growth. When aphids lay eggs to overwinter in autumn and winter, imidacloprid and abamectin can be used alternately for control.
2. Thrips. Control: When thrips inhabit tender leaves, they can cause the tips to wither and die, making growth impossible. If they feed on the underside of leaves and excrete brown substances, it will deform the underside of the leaves, and gray-white or gray-brown streaks will also appear on both sides of the midrib, causing deformation and bending. Pesticides can be sprayed for treatment, choosing those containing active ingredients such as imidacloprid, acetamiprid, and thiamethoxam.
3. Sawflies. Control: The larvae devour rose leaves, creating holes, and feed very quickly. In severe cases, they will gnaw all the leaves and even tender shoots completely bare. In the early stage of pest occurrence, pesticides such as phoxim and high-chlorine emamectin benzoate can be sprayed for control.
When growing miniature roses, be sure to pay attention to light and temperature. During the high temperatures of summer, the relevant treatment work here needs to be done well. During cultivation, the amount of fertilizer and water also needs to be controlled well, and timely pruning is the necessary guarantee for their growth. Only by doing these tasks well can they grow healthily.
