Oak is a general term for plants in the Fagaceae family, encompassing many species rather than referring to one in particular. The oak is the largest flowering plant in the world. Its lifespan is very long, and it can even reach 400 years. The oak's fruit is a nut, and it is good food for squirrels. Many people want to grow an oak tree, so how should an oak tree be planted? And what needs attention?

How to Grow an Oak Tree

1. Oak trees prefer sandy loam or well-drained slightly acidic soil, tolerate environmental pollution, and are highly adaptable to barren, dry, slightly acidic or alkaline soil.

2. Oak trees grow at a moderate rate, growing 60 cm taller each year on moist, well-drained soil.

3. Oak trees are mainly propagated by seed, planted in spring

Oak Tree Planting Methods and Precautions

1. Seed collection from oak trees

① Seed propagation is the main method; seed propagation generally begins to bear fruit at 20 years of age, with a large amount of fruit. The flowering period is May, and the fruit ripening period is September or October.

② When the fruit is ripe, it falls off naturally or drops when the tree is shaken, and the seeds are picked up from the ground. The thousand-grain weight is 3000-4500 grams, and the seedling seed germination rate is high.

③ Seedling seeds sown in spring need to be stored in moist sand. That is, after the seedling seeds are collected, dry them in a cool place, and never expose them to the sun; then collect the pure seedling seeds and store them in layers with 3 times their volume of moist sand until sowing the following spring.

2. Sowing oak tree seeds

① Sowing can be done in autumn-winter or spring. Autumn-winter sowing is carried out in November-December, and generally the seeds are sown as soon as they mature.

② Autumn-winter sowing can be used in areas where frost is not severe, and it conforms to the characteristics of oak species while reducing storage; the following spring the seeds sprout and emerge early, and the survival rate is higher than with spring sowing.

③ Spring sowing should be early to avoid stored seedling seeds sprouting and molding. Seedling seeds are often damaged by weevils; before sowing, seeds can be soaked in 551 warm water for 10 minutes for insecticidal treatment. Sawtooth oak is a mycorrhizal tree species, so mycorrhizal soil should be used to mix with the seeds. Drill sowing is used, with a row spacing of 20 cm and a seed spacing of 10 cm.

④ The sowing rate per 667 sq m is 150-200 kg. When sowing, the seedling seeds need to be placed horizontally, which is beneficial for emergence and rooting; after sowing, cover with 3 cm of soil, or cover with mycorrhizal soil to promote mycorrhizal development. The thickness of the covering soil must be uniform, otherwise emergence will be uneven.

3. Growth of oak trees

① Management of sown seedlings - seedlings emerge about 1 month after sowing. When the seedlings emerge, the young roots have already penetrated deep into the soil.

② To promote the formation of lateral roots, 1 month after emergence, use a sharp spade to cut the main root of the seedling, and water promptly after root cutting. Seedlings whose main root has been cut temporarily slow their growth.

③ During the fast-growing period, both height growth and diameter growth are relatively fast, so fertilizer and water management should be strengthened. Sawtooth oak is a whole-season growth type, and diameter growth does not end until early November. One-year-old seedlings can reach 40-60 cm in height. Transplanting is carried out from after leaf fall in autumn to before buds sprout in spring.

④ During transplanting, pay attention to protecting the root system and keep as many lateral roots as possible. Large seedling cultivation: sawtooth oak is a tree species with strong apical dominance; in large seedling cultivation, to promote a tall and straight trunk, timely pruning is needed, and the cuts should be smooth, without damaging the bark and without leaving stubs.

Oak Tree Propagation Methods

1. Oak trees are mainly propagated by seed.

2. Cultivation period: spring

3. Germination period: seed propagation; seeds can germinate without treatment, but germination takes a long time. If treated at 5 degrees Celsius for 30 to 45 days before sowing, the germination rate can be increased, and they will germinate in 2-3 weeks. The sowing rate per 667 sq m (1 mu) is 100-250 kg, and when sowing the seeds should be placed horizontally to facilitate downward growth of the radicle. The soil covering thickness is 2-5 cm, and the seedling height in the same year can reach 20-40 cm.

Can Oak Trees Be Grown as Potted Plants

They can be grown in pots.

Oak trees are now cultivated in many places in our country. They like a warm, humid, sunny environment, and can also tolerate slight shade, but are not cold-resistant. They require fertile, loose soil and grow well in neutral or slightly acidic soil. When potting, it is suitable to use leaf mold, peat soil plus about 1/4 river sand and a small amount of base fertilizer to make the potting soil. Usually keep the soil moist and apply a dilute liquid fertilizer once every 15-20 days.

Oak trees are deciduous or evergreen trees, reaching 25 to 30 m or even more in height. They have strong stress resistance and tolerate dryness, high temperatures and waterlogging. Their lifespan is very long; research has found that a Jurupa oak tree located in California, USA, has survived for at least 13,000 years and may be the oldest known living organism in the world.
