Monstera deliciosa is currently distributed in many parts of our country, and it is a relatively common ornamental plant in daily life. Its main ornamental appeal lies in its leaves, and it got its name because the leaves resemble a turtle's shell. Nowadays many people like to grow it at home, but in the process of growing it, there are also many points that need attention.

How to Grow Monstera deliciosa

1. Soil and repotting. Monstera deliciosa can take root from cuttings, and after transplanting into a pot, fertile pond mud or black mountain soil can be used. Monstera deliciosa grows quickly and needs repotting once a year to provide sufficient space for plant growth. Repotting is carried out between March and April each year. When repotting, remove part of the old soil and dead roots, and switch to a pot one size larger. Place some hoof pieces, crushed bone, etc. at the bottom of the pot as base fertilizer, and fill in a growing medium mixed with 1/3 leaf mold, 1/3 vegetable garden soil, and 1/3 sandy soil.

2. Light and temperature. Monstera deliciosa avoids direct exposure to scorching sun. In midsummer, the plant should be placed indoors or under a shade shed, and must not be placed on a balcony with overly strong sunlight, otherwise it is easy to cause withered leaves and affect its ornamental value. Monstera deliciosa is not cold-tolerant. When the winter temperature drops to 6°C, it should be moved indoors for warmth, and the indoor temperature should be controlled between 15~20°C, so the plant can overwinter safely.

Cultivation Methods and Precautions for Monstera deliciosa

I. Cultivation methods:

1. Water. Monstera deliciosa likes a moist environment, and during the growing period it needs sufficient water and a certain amount of air humidity. For daily watering, once a day is fine; in summer, once in the morning and once in the evening; when the weather is dry, it is necessary to sprinkle water on the leaf surface and the surrounding environment to ensure the air is fresh and moist and the leaves are vivid. In winter, water once every 3~4 days, and spray the leaf surface once every 7~10 days, mainly to clean the leaves, keep the plant evergreen and fresh, and improve its ornamental value.

2. Fertilizing. Monstera deliciosa is a flowering plant that likes fertilizer. From April to September, fertilize once every 15 days, using diluted cake fertilizer water, or fermented animal and plant manure. Only with sufficient nutrients will the leaf color be verdant and lovely.

II. Precautions:

Monstera deliciosa has strong shade tolerance. In a semi-shady environment, it grows quickly, has vigorous growth, well-developed aerial roots, thick leaves, and bright dark green leaf color. Monstera deliciosa likes to grow in a moist ecological environment. In the south, where there is a lot of rain, if waterlogging lasts too long, root rot, stem rot, and leaf rot will occur.

What to Do If Monstera deliciosa Leaves Turn Yellow

1. Unsuitable soil. For household potted Monstera deliciosa, the growing soil can use a mixed soil made of 2 parts mature loess, 1 part honeycomb coal ash, and 1 part chicken manure. This can both ensure the air permeability of the potting soil for Monstera deliciosa and meet the fertilizer requirements needed for growth.

2. Too much or too little watering. Water regularly according to the surrounding environment. Each watering should soak through, keeping the pot soil surface slightly dry. You can often sprinkle water on the Monstera deliciosa leaves and the surrounding environment to increase air humidity.

3. Too strong or too dark light. In summer, Monstera deliciosa should be shaded, and it is best to place it in a place with scattered light for care. In winter, when the temperature is low, move Monstera deliciosa to a sunny place indoors. If the light at the care location is too weak, supplementary light can be provided at noon regularly.

How to Prune Monstera deliciosa

1. Whole-plant pruning. If the grown plant has already become very dense, then we can prepare a relatively sharp tool and cut off its leaves and vines at a place 2 to 3 cm from the base of the plant.

2. Topping. Use a tool to cut off the branches at the top that are too tall. If this pruning method is used, because nutrients will be dispersed from the top to the bottom, its leaves can grow denser than before, and the plant shape will be more beautiful, but at the same time, attention should also be paid to the problem of leggy branches, stems, and leaves.

3. Shaping. Sometimes the plant will grow crooked, and after growing crooked it loses its original degree of beauty. At this time, we need to shape it. You can take a relatively sharp blade and cut off the excess, weight-bearing side buds of the plant, and slightly tie the main stem with a cloth strip for a period of time to let it recover to an upright state.

When growing Monstera deliciosa, you can start from its growth habits, especially by controlling light and temperature well. If the temperature is too high or too low, it may cause the death of the plant. When growing Monstera deliciosa, water and fertilizer also need strengthened management, so as to ensure its growth.
